House Sorting Cupcakes
Tina This recipe was created in anticipation of the worldwide Harry Potter Book Night. Made with a cream filling and vanilla buttercream, these fun treats are a delicious way to Sort guests into Hogwarts Houses on the fly. They're also a wonderful conversation starter at any Potter-themed event.
Ingredients
Cupcakes
- 24 cupcakes
 - food coloring red, green, yellow, blue

Cream Filling
- 1/2 cup milk whole
 - 3 Tbsp. all-purpose flour
 - 1/2 cup butter unsalted, room temperature
 - 1/2 cup sugar (not powdered sugar)
 - 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract

Vanilla Buttercream
- 1/2 cup butter unsalted, room temperature
 - 1 lb. powdered sugar
 - 1/4 tsp. salt
 - 2-3 Tbsp. heavy cream
 - 2 tsp. vanilla extract

Instructions
Cream Filling
- In a small saucepan, whisk flour into milk until smooth. Heat, stirring constantly, until very thick, thicker than pudding.
 - Remove and allow to cool fully. Placing the pan in an ice bath will speed up the process.
 - Beat butter and sugar together until fluffy in mixer. Add vanilla extract.
 - Once cool, add heated mixture to creamed butter mixture and beat until fluffy. When finished, it will look like thick whipped cream.
 - Divide filling between four bowls and tint one for each of the House colors. Fill one piping bag (filled with a round tip) with each color.
 - Stick piping tip into each cupcake and fill until cupcake puffs up a bit. Alternate colors as desired.

Vanilla Buttercream
- In a large bowl, or bowl of a standing mixer, beat butter for 3 minutes.
 - Beat in powdered sugar and salt.
 - Add 2 tablespoons heavy cream and whisk on high for 4 minutes, until fluffy. If frosting is too thick, add more cream, 1/2 teaspoon at a time, until desired consistency.
 - Stir in vanilla extract.
 - Swirl on top of cupcakes, taking care to cover any hints of color inside.
 - Decorate cupcakes, if desired.

Notes
- Adding too much filling will cause the cupcake to crack open.
 - The vanilla buttercream recipe was adapted from Bakingdom.
