“The Danish Girl”, “Brooklyn”, “Ex Machina” Lead BAFTA Nominations

by Sophie Reid · January 8, 2016

We’re certainly in the thick of awards season at the moment – just yesterday, we learned about the Producers Award nominees, and today, it’s the turn of BAFTA, the British Academy Film and Television Awards. The nominations were announced this morning by Stephen Fry (British audiobooks) and actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Belle, featuring Tom Felton).

It’s no surprise to find that several Potter alumni and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them cast members have projects on the list of nominations.

Starting off with our Potter alumni, there’s a large range of projects nominated, spanning different galaxies, from Brooklyn to Star Wars.

The Revenant, featuring Domhnall Gleeson (Bill Weasley), leads the way with a total of eight nominations. The film has been nominated for Best Film, Director (Alejandro G. Iñárritu), Original Music, Cinematography, Editing, Make Up & Hair, and Sound. Leonardo DiCaprio picks up a nomination for Leading Actor.

Brooklyn, which stars Julie Walters (Molly Weasley), Jim Broadbent (Horace Slughorn), and Domhnall Gleeson, has been nominated for a total of six awards. The film has been nominated for Outstanding British Film, Adapted Screenplay, Costume Design, and Make Up & Hair. Julie Walters has received a nomination for Supporting Actress, while Saoirse Ronan is nominated for Leading Actress.

Next on the list is Ex Machina, also staring Domhnall Gleeson. Ex Machina has been nominated for a total of five awards, including Outstanding British Film, Special Visual Effects, Original Screenplay (Alex Garland), and Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director, or Producer. Alicia Vikander is also nominated for Supporting Actress.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which again, Domhnall Gleeson stars in, is nominated for Production Design, Sound, Original Music, and Special Visual Effects.

Dame Maggie Smith (Professor McGonagall) has received a nomination for Leading Actress for her role in The Lady in the Van.

Cinderella, starring Helena Bonham Carter (Bellatrix Lestrange) and directed by Sir Kenneth Branagh (Gilderoy Lockhart), is nominated for Costume Design (Sandy Powell).

Moving onto our Fantastic Beasts stars, there are a number of familiar projects nominated, including, of course, our very own Newt Scamander.

The Danish Girl has also received five nominations. Eddie Redmayne (Newt Scamander) is nominated for Leading Actor – an award he picked up last year for his role in The Theory of Everything. His co-star, Alicia Vikander, is nominated for Leading Actress. The film is also nominated for Outstanding British Film, Costume Design, and Make Up & Hair.

Steve Jobs, which stars Katherine Waterston (Tina), has been nominated for Adapted Screenplay, as well as Leading Actor and Supporting Actress for Michael Fassbender and Kate Winslet.

And finally, Lobster, starring Colin Farrell (Graves), is nominated for Outstanding British Film.

The awards will take place on February 14 and will be hosted by Stephen Fry. You can see the full list of nominations here.

Who, do you think should pick up the awards? What do you think of the nominations? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
