Five “Potter” Stars Who Would Be Perfect as the Thirteenth Doctor

by Mavra Choudhry · February 4, 2017

Recently, Peter Capaldi announced that he would soon be parting ways with legendary British sci-fi television show Doctor Who. This news has since set the Internet atwitter as fans of the show compile detailed lists of which actors are best suited to take on the lucky 13th incarnation of the famous Time Lord.

For his part, Capaldi gave his two cents to the discussion. As reported by Radio Times, Capaldi stated that his ideal choice for the Thirteenth Doctor would be none other than the Olivier-winning Frances de la Tour, who portrayed Madame Maxime, as the first female doctor. De la Tour’s impressive career spanning several decades makes her an intriguing but ultimately excellent choice.

Of course, it’s a marriage that makes perfect sense; there are no two British franchises quite as well loved as Harry Potter and Doctor Who – so naturally, there are connections aplenty to be made. Indeed, many fans have put forward some beloved faces from Potter as their choice to lead the newest version of Who.

With that said, here are our top picks for which Potter alumni would be perfect as the next Doctor.

1. Rupert Grint

Ever since Capaldi’s departure announcement, Rupert has been cropping up on many fan wishlists for the Thirteenth Doctor. And really, we can’t think of anyone more perfect – with his lovable, goofy charm, Rupert could breathe a new and unique life into the eccentric character.

Many have agreed that the long-running show could use a small breath of fresh air, and – since this choice would mark the second-youngest Doctor ever cast – Rupert seems like the perfect man for the job (especially given his now-demonstrable ability to rock a bow tie, as pictured above).

2. Alfred Enoch

Alfred Enoch’s leading turn on ABC’s How to Get Away With Murder recently came to a grisly close – so at least he might be free to take on this iconic role, because with his youthful charm combined with serious acting chops, he would be a terrific choice for the Time Lord.

Although Alfred gained popularity on HtGAwM, he might not be the obvious choice – until you hop into the TARDIS and jump back a few decades. As it turns out, Alfred’s father, British actor William Russell Enoch, is well known for portraying an original companion to the First Doctor back in the 1960s when the show first aired. So really, it seems like it’s in his blood.

3. Helena Bonham Carter

Need we say anything further? For the past few years, Bonham Carter’s name keeps coming up as the ideal Doctor for many fans. In a 2011 poll, readers of SFX magazine named her as their number-one choice for a female doctor. Since then, Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi have both taken a turn as the Time Lord – but better late than never!

With her spectacular talent combined with her amiable eccentricity and classic British appeal, we can hardly think of anyone better suited to the TARDIS than the actress who gave life to Bellatrix Lestrange.

4. Emma Watson

With Emma’s remarkable popularity ever since the end of the Potter films, it’s scarcely surprising that fans are jumping at the chance to see her take on yet another beloved franchise.

With many people calling for a female Doctor, Emma stands out as a stellar choice to take on the Time Lord, having proved time and again her skill as an actress and her ability to impress and appeal to audiences with both talent and grace.

5. Eddie Redmayne

Eddie Redmayne has been consistently topping fan lists for the next Doctor, especially after his recent turn as our beloved Magizoologist Newt Scamander, and it’s not hard to figure out why.

A uniquely gifted actor, Eddie also expressed interest in being a part of Doctor Who – even comparing Newt’s suitcase to the TARDIS (it’s bigger on the inside, of course – and Newt rocks the bow tie perfectly too). In fact, funnily enough, the similarities between the characters are so prevalent that Matt Smith, the Eleventh Doctor, was apparently in talks to play Newt in the Fantastic Beasts films.
