The Creepiest “Potter” Moments Perfect for Halloween

by Monet Polny · October 31, 2018

Between the evil wizards and dark creatures, there is no shortage of scary and horrifying moments in the Harry Potter series. There are plenty of these situations to point out, but what about the moments that were just plain creepy? Not every encounter with a villain is terrifying because some are merely weird, strange, or disturbing. These encounters make the scary moments all the more petrifying! We’re looking at the moments that didn’t scare us to death but were surely bone-chilling nonetheless.

1. The Forbidden Corridor on the Third Floor

Far from the most terrifying moment in the series, when the trio accidentally winds up in a forbidden section of the castle, they are completely freaked out by what they find there. This is the first real adventure that the three friends go on in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, and it is an extremely creepy experience. It sets the tone for all their future adventures, which will be full of excitement, danger, and monstrous dogs with too many heads.

2. The Maze Task

While all the Triwizard Tournament tasks are dangerous and alarming, the final task is a whole new level of spooky. There’s fog, aggressive plants, a strange silence behind every bush, and plenty of monsters to face. While the other tasks were straightforwardly terrifying, the maze seems to take on a life of its own and that disconcerts Harry. This is easily the creepiest moment in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire!

3. First Time in the Forbidden Forest

After hearing from Dumbledore how menacing the Forbidden Forest is, readers were not disappointed. This is not the kind of chapter that you can read after dark. What makes J.K. Rowling’s creepy scenes so intriguing is that she doesn’t reveal everything at once. It takes a while for Harry to finally find the evil in the forest, but when he does, what follows is thrilling and sinister in the best way possible.

4. The Shrieking Shack

The most haunted building in Britain lives up to its name. When Harry and Hermione enter the shack, they have to bypass the Whomping Willow and then go down the passage to save Ron. The scene is set perfectly with a dusty and ruined room and no mysterious big black dog in sight. The reader goes from realizing that the shack isn’t inhabited by ghosts, but by the creepy escapee of Azkaban. This moment is chock-full of revelations and mad ramblings by Sirius Black. This scene doesn’t turn out to be a frightening moment, but it’s certainly chilling and dramatic.

5. Department of Mysteries

By Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, the trio has had plenty of strange adventures with some unexplainable magic. However, when they rush to the Department of Mysteries to save Sirius, the atmosphere is the most unnerving that the characters have ever encountered. Harry doesn’t understand the prophecy, the Death Eaters are chasing them, the veil is otherworldly, and the objects on the shelves are ominous. We never really find out everything that goes on in this department, but what a bizarre mystery it remains.

6. Godric’s Hollow

There are several action-packed moments in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, but one surprising and disturbing scene that shocked readers was when Harry and Hermione visited Godric’s Hollow. They meet Bathilda Bagshot and are invited to her home, but everything isn’t as it seems. In a creepy scene for the ages, Bagshot’s body crumples up and Nagini emerges from the shell! It’s almost too easy to picture this gruesome and macabre scene when you read the description. We as readers were unnerved by the event, but imagine how Harry and Hermione felt!

7. Professor Trelawney’s Prophecy

Source

Professor Trelawney is the opposite of scary. Yet when the normally eccentric and well-meaning teacher recites a chilling prophecy to Harry, the moment is definitely creepy. Her body convulses and her limbs shake. Harry, normally calm in the face of danger, is frightened at this sudden change. If all this weren’t enough, Trelawney speaks in a powerful, threatening voice and speaks of a dreadful prophecy. This moment gives the reader a greater sense of unease at Voldemort’s return, and it’s quite weird as well.

8. The Deathday Party

Source

No one knows how to party like a Hogwarts ghost. This underrated moment from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets has Harry, Ron, and Hermione attending Nearly Headless Nick’s party during Halloween. The music, food, and even the dungeon’s temperature are disturbing. Yet the moment is a far cry from frightening. The ghosts are humorous and it’s interesting to see so many new ghosts at Hogwarts. From a human’s perspective, the party is strange and it quickly becomes an uncomfortable environment for the trio. This is the perfect Halloween chapter with enough creepy descriptions and supernatural happenings to keep us on our toes!

Potter Quote

“She stopped you killing me. And I’ve seen the real you, I saw you last year. You’re a wreck. You’re barely alive. That’s where all your power got you. You’re in hiding. You’re ugly, you’re foul —”
