“Cursed Child” Receives Eight Nominations for the 42nd Annual Dora Mavor Moore Awards

On Monday, the Toronto Alliance for Performing Arts (TAPA) announced 235 nominations for the 42nd annual Dora Mavor Moore Awards. These awards determine excellence in professional theatre, dance, and opera in Toronto, Canada. Nominated among some of the most exciting performances onstage is Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

The Dora Mavor Moore Awards will take place on September 19 at the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre in the Elgin Theatre. Cursed Child is nominated in eight categories, including Outstanding Production; Outstanding Direction to John Tiffany; Outstanding Performance in a Featured Role to both Gregory Prest (Ron Weasley) and Sarah Afful (Hermione Granger); Outstanding Scenic/Projection Design to Christine Jones, Finn Ross, and Ash J. Woodward; Outstanding Costume Design to Katrina Lindsay; Outstanding Lighting Design to Neil Austin; and Outstanding Sound Design/Composition to Gareth Fry and Imogen Heap.

Tiffany, Prest, Afful, Jones, Ross, Woodward, Lindsay, Austin, Fry, and Heap are all eligible to receive a $1,000 cash prize from the Pat and Tony Adams Freedom Fund for the Arts if they win in their respective categories.

Other nominated Mirvish-backed productions include & Juliet, also with eight nominations; Boy Falls from the Sky, with six nominations; and ROOM, with two nominations. Mirvish Productions Leads the Dora Awards Nominations with 24

The nominations for the 2021/22 Dora Mavor Moore Awards were announced earlier today. Mirvish Productions leads with 24 nominations. Of these, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and & Juliet each received eight nominations, Boy Falls [f]rom the Sky received six nominations, and Room received two nominations. Also, it’s worth noting that one of the upcoming shows in [the] 2022/23 Off-Mirvish season, The Land Acknowledgement (As You Like It) received 3 nominations.

The Dora Awards will be handed out on September 19, 2022, at the Elgin Theatre.

GENERAL THEATRE DIVISION

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child earned 8 nominations, including Outstanding Production, Outstanding Direction to John Tiffany, Outstanding Performance in a Featured Role to [both] Gregory Prest (Ron Weasley) and Sarah Afful (Hermione Granger), Outstanding Scenic/Projection Design to the team including Christine Jones (scenic), Finn Ross and Ash J. Woodward (video), Outstanding Costume Design to Katrina Lindsay, Outstanding Lighting Design to Neil Austin and Outstanding Sound Design/Composition to Gareth Fry (sound design) with Imogen Heap (composer & arranger).

ROOM garnered 2 nominations, including Outstanding Performance in a Leading Role to Alexis Gordon (Ma) and Outstanding Lighting Design to Bonnie Beecher.

MUSICAL THEATRE DIVISION

& Juliet earned 8 nominations, including Outstanding Production, Outstanding Performance in a Featured Role to Melanie La Barrie (Nurse), Outstanding Performance in a Leading Role to [both] Betsy Wolfe (Anne) and Lorna Courtney (Juliet), Outstanding Musical Direction to Dominic Fallacaro, Outstanding Direction to Luke Sheppard, Outstanding Achievement in Design to Soutra Gilmour (scenic) and Outstanding Original Choreography [to] Jennifer Weber.

Boy Falls [f]rom the Sky tapped 6 nominations for Outstanding Production, Outstanding Performance in a Leading Role to Jake Epstein, Outstanding New Musical to Jake Epstein, Outstanding Musical Direction to David Atkinson, Outstanding Direction to Robert McQueen and Outstanding Achievement in Design for Brandon Kleiman (scenic).
