Alfonso Cuarón to attend Beijing Film Festival, plus an hour-long video conversation!
Following his recent award success for Gravity, Alfonso Cuarón will be heading to China to attend the Beijing International Film Festival, which takes place April 16-23.
Alfonso is expected to take part in a session on coproduction, which will take place on April 17. The organizers say that
“the seminar will look into the development situation of China’s film industry from the perspective of the development of the global film industry, push forward all-round film cooperation between China and the rest of the world, and promote the globalization of Chinese films.”
Variety article also states that
“While not a U.S.-Chinese co-production, ‘Gravity’ gave pride of place to a Chinese spacecraft, which acted as temporary sanctuary for Sandra Bullock’s character as she attempted to make her way back to Earth. The film was one of Hollywood’s top scorers in China last year, grossing $70.7 million.”
But if you don’t live in China, or you can’t wait that long to get an Alfonso fix, then BAFTA has just released an hour-long video of Alfonso Cuaron in discussion. In the session, Alfonso talks about his long career and the ups and downs he has experienced.
In the session, which is titled “Behind Closed Doors with Alfonso Cuaron,” he talks about Gravity, his early work, his love for The Little Princess, film school, and his childhood. Alfonso says that once he has finished a film, he “does not watch it again.”
Of course, Alfonso discusses his role as director on the third Potter film, which begins at twenty-two minutes in, and how reluctant he was at first to get involved in the franchise. Yet, he said, “it was an amazing experience; it was so much fun.” He was mostly interested in the “transition from childhood into teenage years” and the themes found in the film. He also praises the cast and crew of the films and the work that Chris Columbus did before he came in.
