If “Harry Potter” Were a Horror Movie

by Ashley McCann · October 14, 2016

It is officially horror movie season! For the diehard horror fan, the Harry Potter films just weren’t scary enough. While some aspects make for a good spook (hello, soul-sucking Dementors, macabre Thestrals, and half-alive wizards leeching onto the back of heads), we’re left to only imagine what the Harry Potter movies would be like if they were classic horror movies. For starters:

1. Voldemort wouldn’t be even close to human.

He would be some weird demon, ghost, or alien. I always said that they should’ve given him red eyes in the movies—that would’ve definitely helped with giving an even more inhuman look than just missing a nose.

2. The ghosts would be much scarier.

We don’t even get to see our favorite poltergeist in the story! If the films were classified as horror, there would be way more creepy encounters with the dead.

3. The plot would be more focused on the creatures and beasts.

There are some seriously scary creatures in the wizarding world, but they are never really the main cause of terror. Give us more Dementors, werewolves, vampires, three-headed dogs, giant spiders, dragons, trolls, and the like!

4. Harry would trip up a lot more.

Can’t have a good horror movie without at least one random trip while the protagonist runs away from danger.

5. Mr. Weasley’s car wouldn’t be so helpful.

Cars never bring about any good in a horror movie—they either usually stall at the most crucial moment or won’t even work at all. In the Potter storyline, however, the car proves to be useful in multiple dire situations.

6. Someone would meet a tragic fate after each kiss.

It’s pretty much a given that someone either gets kidnapped or murdered after an affectionate scene. Less kissing, more suspense!

Maybe the Potter films would never make for good horror, though—a lot of the basic horror cliches could be explained away by magic. What do you think? Would you like to see spookier versions of the films, or are they fine just the way they are? Let us know!
