Sorting the “Riverdale” Characters

by Kris Keall · May 15, 2017

With the earth-shattering Season 1 finale of Riverdale under our belts, it seems like the perfect time to pay homage to our favorite characters by Sorting them into Hogwarts Houses, now that we are well acquainted with their personalities, quirks, and motivations. Although there are no explicit spoilers mentioned below, it is still recommended that you proceed with caution and perhaps finish all of the episodes beforehand if you haven’t already.

Disclaimer: These Sortings are based on the characterizations in the Netflix series, not the original Archie comics.

Archie – Gryffindor

Archie is a Gryffindor through and through. There are times when he rushes headlong into questionable situations, but he is always willing to make things right, even if it means getting his hands dirty and landing himself in even more trouble. He does seem to have a certain ambitious streak, harboring dreams of becoming an established musician, but when push comes to shove, he decides that friendship and integrity are far more important to him than recognition and attaining his goals.

Betty – Hufflepuff

Betty’s great academic standing might at first lead one to think that she’s a Ravenclaw, but upon closer scrutiny, she most definitely seems to be a Hufflepuff, hard work being one of the wonderful traits of that House. She tries to keep the peace in her home life and her school life, but this is sometimes counteracted by her very strong sense of justice. She is fiercely protective of her loved ones and is determined to get to the bottom of the occurrences in her town. At first glance, Betty seems like your typical, sweet-tempered girl-next-door, but whatever you do, don’t push her, because she will push back – hard.

Jughead – Ravenclaw

Jughead is so intent on finding out the truth about the murder of Jason, he spends the entire season writing a manuscript about it. This alone places him in Ravenclaw territory, but it is compounded by other characteristics of his as well. He is unapologetically unique and a bit of an outcast, like Luna Lovegood. He shows an appreciation for culture and history, and he can be a bit of a smart alec at times. He also displays a sense of wisdom and maturity beyond his age, although this is at least partly because of his circumstances forcing him to grow up too soon.

Veronica – Slytherin

Veronica’s search for the truth, whatever it may be and regardless of the outcome, puts her very close to Ravenclaw territory as well. However, this is only one aspect of her character; in every other respect, she seems best suited to Slytherin. She is unerringly loyal to those who matter to her, but only if she thinks they are worthy of it. If not, then she is completely willing to cut all ties. She knows how to manipulate others to her advantage, and she is prepared to go behind other people’s backs to get what she needs. (It is worth noting that, despite her serpentine maneuvers, most everything she does is out of moral conviction – #NotAllSlytherins.)

Cheryl – Slytherin

Cheryl oozes Slytherin. She single-mindedly pursues every goal she sets her sights on, and if anyone doubts her or gets in her way, she views it as a challenge rather than an obstacle. In true Voldemort fashion, she has followers rather than friends, and she does not take kindly to disloyalty from them. She certainly seems like a clear-cut villain, but as her layers get peeled back, she turns out to be very complex indeed. However, as much depth as she gains as a character, she never loses her signature dramatic flair, of which Voldemort would be immensely proud. On an unrelated note, she is also hands-up the most stylish character in the series (though Veronica is a strong contender).

Do you agree with the way these characters are Sorted? Would you have Sorted any of them differently? Let us know in the comments!
