Five of the Bravest Non-Gryffindors

by Monet Polny · May 23, 2018

Our favorite characters are more than just the Hogwarts Houses they were Sorted into. Each House has specific attributes, and today, we’ll be looking at five of the bravest non-Gryffindors. Not only do a select group of wizards possess boldness and strength; the members of the other Hogwarts Houses do as well! Think of each trait as a word to describe a character’s personality, such as a chivalrous or courageous person. Make way for the cavalry of lions; here come the best characters with Gryffindor traits!

1. Fleur Delacour

We don’t know much about the beautiful Triwizard champion Fleur Delacour, but she is a gifted witch. Harry dismisses her early on, believing Fleur to be obnoxious. However, there’s more to the headstrong Fleur than just her looks and her tough outer shell. If Fleur had attended Hogwarts, she would most likely have been Sorted into Gryffindor. She’s the only female champion in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, which is an inspirational feat in itself. Fleur embodies the Gryffindor trait of courage. She’s willing to fight her way out of a situation and will use any means to protect her little sister. Fleur would make a courageous Gryffindor, which makes sense given that she marries into the most Gryffindor family there is.

2. Luna Lovegood

Another Gryffindor trait is nerve. Luna Lovegood is a creative and steadfast friend to many Gryffindors, but her roots are in Ravenclaw House. Perhaps the reason why she spends so much time with Gryffindors is that she possesses an equally strong moral center. Luna is “nerve,” that sense of self that is put to the test in difficult situations. Luna displays this trait even in small ways. She fights in the Battle of Hogwarts but is also teased by students at the school. Instead of fighting back, she chooses to be the bigger person and doesn’t let it get to her.

3. Cedric Diggory

One of the more underrated Gryffindor traits is chivalry. This can pertain to how a wizard would act in battle, but some people are chivalrous and honorable in everyday life. Cedric Diggory has this way about him, and it’s this trait that sets him apart. He’s a good sport when it comes to Quidditch, setting aside any personal ambition he has for the sake of a fair game. Furthermore, he’s a pure soul, and he isn’t afraid to stand up against all manner of Dark creatures and wizards. Diggory is the embodiment of a loyal Hufflepuff capable of becoming the ultimate warrior and protector.

4. Nymphadora Tonks

In the Potter series, few wizards are more daring than Aurors. They go out looking for trouble, facing the most dangerous opponents. Nymphadora Tonks is the most daring Hufflepuff we know. Her bold streak is carried throughout the series and is almost reminiscent of Sirius or Fred and George. Daring, as a Gryffindor trait, means being adventurous and plucky. Tonks, even after just giving birth, refuses to stay cooped up at home and instead goes to fight in battle alongside her husband. She is definitely adventurous and likes to be at the center of the action! She is a spitfire and is, in her own way, a lion at heart.

5. Albus Severus Potter

We’ve covered Hufflepuffs and Ravenclaws who embody Gryffindor traits, but Slytherins aren’t exempt from this. We briefly met Albus Severus Potter before Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, but there is no doubt that any son of Harry Potter’s would possess a goodness inside of himself. Albus is Sorted into Slytherin and takes on a brave attitude about it. Even though he is defensive and confused about his new identity, he strives to make the best of it.

Albus represents all that is positive about Slytherins: a strong self of self, perseverance, and resourcefulness. However, above all else, he has the bravery of a Gryffindor. Albus does what is best for himself, and having a strong moral character is part of being brave. Despite the struggles he faced, he learned to be proud of who he is while at the same time not falling prey to the darkness of being a Slytherin. Certainly, he has to put up with teasing and loneliness, but he comes out the other side a better person, and he represents the trait of bravery.
