Sorting Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice” Characters into Hogwarts Houses

by McKay S. · April 27, 2020

Both Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice and J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series grace the list of best-selling books of all time. Although Pride and Prejudice was published nearly 200 years before the first Harry Potter book, it’s hard not to imagine which of the Hogwarts Houses the Bennet sisters and their beaux would be Sorted into.

Elizabeth “Lizzy” Bennet – Ravenclaw

It’s no secret that Lizzy is the most sensible of the Bennet girls. She is a sassy, opinionated, “obstinate, headstrong girl!” Her wit comes second only to her love of her father and her sister, Jane. Her love of learning and her desire to have others understand her point of view makes her a Ravenclaw, without a doubt.

Fitzwilliam Darcy – Gryffindor

I think Mr. Darcy would quickly be Sorted into Gryffindor, and it has nothing to do with his excessive pride. Mr. Darcy consistently shows bravery, such as in assisting his sworn enemy and in acknowledging his feelings for Elizabeth. He is up-front, and people often take offense to his delivery even when he means well. Although he may not be a traditional Gryffindor, I believe him to be a Gryffindor nonetheless.

Jane Bennet – Hufflepuff

The only thing to match Miss Bennet’s beauty is her gentleness. Jane Bennet finds the good in everyone, almost to a fault. She is a spot-on Hufflepuff. Her own father believes that she and Mr. Bingley are “so complying, that nothing will ever be resolved on; so easy, that every servant will cheat [them]; and so generous, that [they] will always exceed [their] income.”

Charles Bingley – Hufflepuff

Mr. Bingley fell quickly in love with Jane. He is an eager friend, a gentleman, and ignores the very obvious faults in Jane’s family. His kindness and generosity make him an obvious Hufflepuff.

Mr.Bennet – Ravenclaw

Mr. Bennet is content to sit in his library and read. I don’t think you can get much more Ravenclaw than that.

Mrs. Bennet – Slytherin

Everything Mrs. Bennet does is to benefit herself and her daughters. She is constantly trying to improve her connections. She is very wary of her social standing and networks wherever she goes. I would definitely say she is a Slytherin.

George Wickham – Slytherin

George Wickham cares only about financial success. He takes advantage of everyone he meets and doesn’t care who he damages in his path. I know that not all Slytherins are bad, but he is the worst kind of Slytherin.

Lydia Bennet – Slytherin

Lydia cares only about how other people view her. She is desperate for attention from men. Her image is everything to her. Although she is silly and unintentional with her actions, I still think she’s more likely to be a Slytherin than anything else. She may not be the cold and calculating kind of Slytherin, but she is a Slytherin nonetheless. I’d put her on par with Crabbe or Goyle.

Mr. Collins – Ravenclaw

With what he is lacking in social intelligence, Mr. Collins makes up for in book smarts. He is a very traditional man who enjoys reading sermons and teaching what he knows to others. As much as I hate to admit it as a Ravenclaw myself, Mr. Collins is likely a Ravenclaw – that, or possibly a Squib.

Lady Catherine de Bourgh – Slytherin

Lady Catherine de Bourgh is a proud, severe woman. No one is good enough for her family and her connections. She finds the fault in all. She believes herself better than most and voices her unwanted opinion. She cares only for herself and for her connections. She is the most prideful of Slytherins.
