Castium Revelio: Magical Award Nominations Across Europe
Welcome to this week’s edition of MuggleNet’s Casting News! After we showed you a new poster for Warwick Davis’s Willow last week, we’re announcing Wizarding World nominations in two European award shows and our first magical Christmas advert of the year. Castium Revelio!
Before we start on the award nominations, however, we’ve got a new role for Clémence Poésy (Fleur Delacour). She’s joined The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, a spin-off of The Walking Dead, as Isabelle, a member of a religious group who joins protagonist Daryl (played by Norman Reedus) on a journey across France. On the journey, she must confront her dark history.
Lee Ingleby (Stan Shunpike) has also got a new role this week. He’s joining the cast of Channel 4’s prison drama Screw for its second season. He’ll play a prisoner with a secret plan in the show, which is currently shooting in Glasgow, Scotland.
It’s award time! First up are the Wizarding World alums who have been nominated for awards at the British Independent Film Awards (BIFA). The ceremony marks the start of the British awards season and will take place on December 4. Living, starring Bill Nighy (Rufus Scrimgeour), has been nominated for several awards, including Best Music Supervision, Best Costume Design, Best Casting, and Best Production Design. Nighy and his co-star Aimee Lou Wood (Sex Education) have both been nominated for individual awards, in the Best Lead Performance and Best Supporting Performance categories, respectively. Living was also nominated in three categories – Best British Independent Film, Best Screenplay, and Best Director – in which it will compete against Dame Emma Thompson‘s (Professor Trelawney) Good Luck to You, Leo Grande. Thompson herself has also been nominated for Good Luck to You, Leo Grande for Best Joint Lead Performance.
Ciarán Hinds (Aberforth Dumbledore) and Toby Jones (Dobby) are also up for awards at the BIFA, for their film The Wonder. They’ve been nominated as part of the Best Ensemble Performance category, while the film has also been nominated for Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Original Music, Best Makeup and Hair Design, Best Sound, and Best Production Design. It will also compete against Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, and Living for Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best British Independent Film.
Sir Kenneth Branagh (Gilderoy Lockhart) is up for a more international award. He’s been nominated for the European Screenwriter award at the European Film Awards for his semi-autobiographical film Belfast. The film has been nominated for and received several other awards across this year’s festivals and ceremonies, including the Outstanding British Film Award at the BAFTAs and Best Screenplay at the Golden Globes.
We’ve got something to get you into the festive spirit next. British supermarket chain Aldi has released its Christmas advert for 2022. It’s narrated by Jim Broadbent (Professor Slughorn) and features music from John Williams (Harry Potter composer), and it follows the storyline of the Christmas classic Home Alone, with the store’s mascot, Kevin the Carrot, taking the role from Macaulay Culkin. There’s also exciting news for Rohan Gotobed (11-year-old Sirius Black). He’s been picked as a playwright as a part of Mercury Theatre’s Mercury Playwrights, Producers, and Directors scheme, which is aimed at local artists who want to get into the theatre industry. Congratulations to Gotobed!
We’re sticking in the world of theater for our final story this week. John Tiffany (director of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child) will direct the world premiere of a new stage musical called Wild Rose, which is based on a film of the same name from 2018. The stage musical will see a workshop early next year, with the hopes of a premiere in Scotland in 2024 and a move to Broadway and the West End in the future.
