June 2Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets was published in the US.

June 20Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets hit number one on the adult New York Times Best Seller list.

July 8Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban was published in the UK.

August 15Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone hit number one on the adult New York Times Best Seller list after being on the list for 34 consecutive weeks.

September 8Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban was published in the United States with a first printing of 500,000 copies.

September 26Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban hit number one on the adult New York Times Best Seller list.

October 22 – In a Chicago Sun-Times article, it was revealed that, at last count, 8.2 million copies of the Harry Potter books were in print in America alone.

December 1Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban won the Nestlé Smarties Book Prize Gold Award in the 9–11 years category, and J.K. Rowling received a special certificate to celebrate her winning of this prize for the third year running.
