Frank Dillane to star in “Walking Dead” spin-off show

by Toni Louise Cooper · December 2, 2014

As of Sunday in the US (and yesterday in the UK), The Walking Dead fans were left hanging at a crucial moment at the end of Season 5’s mid-season finale and now have to wait until February to see what happens next. However, while fans mourn this break, exciting news has been released about the popular TV show’s new spin-off series!

Fans of both TWD and Harry Potter will rejoice to hear that Frank Dillane (young Tom Riddle from Half-Blood Prince) has been cast in the upcoming television show’s pilot episode. According to Deadline, Dillane will play the son of a female guidance counselor, who is battling a drug addiction. Alongside him, actress Alycia Debnam Carey (Into the Storm) will play the role of the ambitious daughter of the same woman.

Although the article says the spin-off is still untitled, it does mention that it could apparently be called Cobalt – Screen Crush also mentions this slightly, saying it could have “emerged as a potential new surname (or at least temporary codename).” Nothing else has arisen about a possible title as of yet.

It was only a couple of months ago that the main characters of the show were revealed, full descriptions of which can be seen below:

SEAN CABRERA | A Latino male in his early 40s, Sean is a good man trying to do right by everyone in his life.

CODY CABRERA | Sean’s whip-smart and rebellious teenage son. Known as the angriest kid in town.

NANCY TOMPKINS | A thirty[-]something single mom to two kids, Nancy looks like the girl next door, but there’s an edge to her.

NICK TOMPKINS | Nancy’s screwed up teenage son. He’s too old to stay home, too scared to flee.

ASHLEY TOMPKINS | Nancy’s mostly level-headed teenage daughter. Her ambition is in direct proportion to her older brother’s failures. She loves her mom, but it’s time to get out of Dodge.

ANDREA CHAPMAN  | A somewhat wilted flower child, forty[-]something Andrea — yep, another Andrea! — has retreated to the outskirts of the city to recover after a horrible marriage.

From said descriptions, we can piece together that Dillane’s character will be named Nick, and Debnam Carey’s will be Ashley. It was also mentioned that there’s a possibility the show will be a sort-of prequel to the original series, being set just as the zombie apocalypse broke out but in a different location.

Robert Kirkman, creator of the comic book series that AMC’s The Walking Dead is based off of (and also a writer and producer on the show), will of course be involved (along with David Alpert and Gale Anne Hurd, who have also helped create TWD), with David Erickson co-writing and Adam Davidson directing the pilot.

Are you a fan of The Walking Dead? Are you excited that Frank Dillane has been cast in the spin-off? Let us know your thoughts below.
