Hogwarts House-Inspired Make-Up Looks

by Ashley McCann · March 27, 2016

We’ve seen plenty of make-up artists who love creating stunning transformations, from faces to entire bodies, but let’s face it, most of us aren’t that talented. So we figured why not give examples that anyone could easily wear? These everyday looks were inspired by House colors. What is so great about these looks is that they are so diverse because different colors can represent so many moods or energies, like this recent article on House color interpretations establishes.

I hadn’t worn red eye make-up probably since middle school, so I was a little skeptical at first about how this was going to look. I searched for some ideas and found that red on the actual eyelid was a little off-putting, but a smoky red in and above the crease looked a lot better for my skin tone. I took advantage of Gryffindor’s gold and added it to the eyelids to make them pop. Finally, I added a vibrant red lipstick with gold accents! I received quite a few compliments on this Gryffindor-inspired look, and it made me feel as fierce as a lion.

Hufflepuff

This one was probably the most challenging out of all four houses due to the fact that everything I tried just kind of looked odd. I’m not quite sure that I have ever seen anyone actually wearing yellow eye shadow before. I felt like I was going to a rave.

At first, I tried another smoky eye with yellow on the eyelid, but that did not feel right. So I decided to try a darker look with yellow accents, which looked slightly better. I felt the silliest in this make-up, which is probably a good indicator that it definitely fits the Hufflepuff personality. Black lipstick is totally optional because it tends to be a bit too bold for some people, but it seems to draw away some of the attention from the bright eyes.

This look was my favorite! The only thing I regret is not having a darker green eye shadow because it looks a little blue in all the pictures I took. This is the most similar to my everyday look, which makes sense because I am indeed a Slytherin! This particular shade of green lipstick is probably my favorite of all time. I used black liquid lipstick to darken around the edges to create a more ominous color.

Ravenclaw

I felt like a simple yet exaggerated look was the best way to portray Ravenclaw, so I went for a sharp winged eye and bold lips once more. Winged eyeliner is definitely suited for this House because their mascot is the eagle! I also added bronze accents to the eyes, but you could go with the movie interpretation and choose silver instead. I had never worn a blue lip color until I tried it for this either, and I absolutely loved it.

One final thought: Don’t be afraid to mix these up if you’re in a hybrid House!
