Top Seven Nastiest Umbridge Moments

In honor of Be Nasty Day, I’m looking at the nastiest character in the series, Dolores Umbridge. Umbridge was awful to the staff and students at Hogwarts. She may be worse than Voldemort. Below are her top seven nastiest moments.

1. When She Wants to Get Harry Expelled

And those in favor of conviction?’
Fudge raised his hand; so did half a dozen others, including the witch on his right [Umbridge]” (Order of the Phoenix 151).

The very first thing Umbridge tries to do is expel Harry from Hogwarts. As first impressions go, this was not a good one.

2. When She Tries to Fire Trelawney

It was your home,’ said Professor Umbridge, and Harry was revolted to see the enjoyment stretching her toadlike face as she watched Professor Trelawney sink, sobbing uncontrollably, onto one of her trunks, “until an hour ago, when the Minister of Magic countersigned the order for your dismissal” (Order of the Phoenix 595).

I never really liked Trewlaney, but seeing this moment on screen made me hate Umbridge more than I already did.

3. When She Places a Lifetime Quidditch Ban on Harry and George

So . . . I really think I will have to ban these two from playing Quidditch ever again,’ she said, looking from Harry to George and back again” (Order of the Phoenix 416).

Power-hungry Umbridge goes after Harry once again, this time taking him away from his favorite sport.

4. When She Harms Harry

He looked back at the parchment, placed the quill upon it once more, wrote I must not tell lies, and felt the searing pain on the back of his hand for a second time” (Order of the Phoenix 267).

This was the first time we see Umbridge physically hurting anybody. The fact that she takes such pleasure out of it makes us hate her even more.

5. When She Attacks McGonagall and Hagrid

No fewer than four Stunners had shot from the figures around the cabin toward Professor McGonagall” (Order of the Phoenix 721).

Get him, get him!’ screamed Umbridge” (Order of the Phoenix 722).

Once again Umbridge goes after a popular character, attacking another one in the process. She really isn’t doing herself any favors.

6. When She Drives Fred and George Out

Fred and George wheeled about to tumultuous applause from the students below and sped out of the open front doors into the glorious sunset (Order of the Phoenix 675).

Although Fred and George’s exit was awesome, it would have been nice to have more Fred and George moments.

7. When She Goes After Muggle-Borns

The man’s screams subsided, but dry sobs echoed through the corridor.
‘Take him away,’ said Umbridge” (Deathly Hallows 258).

Even after Voldemort was publicly back, she still worked for a corrupt and callous Ministry. She cruelly took pleasure in other people’s fear and pain.
