Sorting “His Dark Materials” Characters into Hogwarts Houses

The second season of His Dark Materials, based on Philip Pullman’s series of the same name, recently ended. This latest adaptation is written by Harry Potter and the Cursed Child writer Jack Thorne. While we were watching, we couldn’t help but wonder which Hogwarts Houses some of these characters would be in.

Lyra Silvertongue – Gryffindor

Lyra is a complex protagonist who possesses characteristics that belong to multiple Houses. Her last name was given to her by Iofur Raknison as a result of her ability to lie well to further her own causes. This manipulation is a trait belonging to Slytherin. However, Lyra is also an incredibly intelligent girl who figures out how to read the alethiometer without any training. In addition, she is incredibly loyal to her friends. After all, she only leaves Oxford and goes after the Gobblers to find and save her friend, Roger. Nevertheless, her willingness to undergo this journey and her bravery when she encounters any obstacles she faces put her in Gryffindor.

Will Parry – Hufflepuff

Like Lyra, Will has also faced many trials during his journey. Forced to flee from his world, he finds a window to another one where he eventually discovers Lyra. Although initially hesitant to open up to her, once he does, the two form a deep bond and he looks after her as best as he can. His unwavering loyalty to his friends and family puts him in Hufflepuff.

Marisa Coulter – Slytherin

Mrs. Coulter is the embodiment of a Slytherin. She is incredibly ambitious and does whatever she must to get what she wants. At the beginning of Season 1, she does what she needs to secure power for herself, even committing atrocious acts against children for the Magisterium. Later on, she is preoccupied with finding Lyra, and she is more than happy to use Carlo to do this.

Lord Asriel Belacqua – Slytherin

Lord Asriel possesses many Ravenclaw traits, including great intelligence. His pursuit of knowledge is what drives him to the North and through the anomaly into another world. But like Marisa, he does whatever he needs to get what he wants, even if it does involve hurting or killing others. His cunning and manipulative nature puts him in Slytherin instead.

Lee Scoresby – Hufflepuff

Aeronaut Lee Scoresby is a kind, paternal man who grows attached to Lyra when he meets her. He pledges himself to his cause and helps her rescue the kidnapped children, which saves them from having their daemons split from them. He is incredibly loyal to Lyra and does whatever he can to help her, even when they are in different worlds. This loyalty makes him a true Hufflepuff.

Lord Carlo Boreal/Sir Charles Latrom – Slytherin

Like Marisa, Carlo is incredibly manipulative and has no qualms using other people to get what he wants. He steals the alethiometer from Lyra and uses it to get Lyra and Will to steal the subtle knife for him. The fact that his daemon is a snake further emphasizes the Slytherin connection.
