“SpeakBeasty” Episode 143: “Desperate Times Call for Desperate Housewives”

by Amy Hogan · January 23, 2022

On this episode of SpeakBeasty, hosts Ann, Geoff, Marjolaine, and Shannen discuss the International Confederation of Wizards and its role in upholding the Statute of Secrecy and governing the wizarding world.

From the trailer, we know that Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore centers around an election for the Head of the International Confederation of Wizards, also called the Supreme Mugwump. Our hosts discuss what we know about the international governing body and what we might see in the upcoming film.

The International Confederation of Wizards put the Statute of Secrecy in place in 1692. Given that knowledge, it makes sense that Grindelwald would want to run for the position of Supreme Mugwump, not just for the sake of holding a powerful office but also to be in charge of the entity that upholds the very statute he wishes to undo.

This week’s podcast question is “Do you think the International Statute of Secrecy is worth protecting, or should it be dissolved?” Send us your thoughts and theories at SpeakBeasty@gmail.com, or reach out to us on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram!

It’s high time I paid homage to the mighty MuggleNet. Where to start? I love the design, (I currently favour the ‘Dementor’ layout), the polls (I actually voted in the ‘Who’s the Half-Blood Prince?’ one), the pretty-much-exhaustive information on all books and films, the wonderful editorials (more insight there than in several companion volumes I shall not name), 101 Ways to Annoy Lord Voldemort (made me laugh aloud), the Wall of Shame (nearly as funny as some of the stuff I get)… pretty much everything. Webmaster Emerson, Eric, Jamie, Damon, Ben, Matthew, Rachel, Jaymz and Sharon, I salute you.
