MuggleNet Throwback: J.K. Rowling immortalized in Legos

We’ve seen many tributes paid over the years to our beloved Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling, but nothing can quite compare to the extraordinary talents lent to create a portrait of Rowling back in 2009 made entirely of Legos, more than 48,000 to be exact! When asked to vote on which public figures they considered their “ultimate hero” in a poll released by Legoland Windsor, children surveyed responded overwhelmingly in favor of Rowling, who came in atop the list with just over 37% of the vote. The vote resulted in a massive collaborative effort that brought children and engineers together to construct a stunning Lego portrait of Rowling at the Legoland Windsor theme park, located in Berkshire, England.

Rowling was followed in the poll results by Disney’s latest breakout star at the time, Zac Efron (27.3%). United States President Barack Obama came in at third (11.8%). However, Rowling was not the only Potter affiliate to make the list! Daniel Radcliffe, the boy wizard himself, landed in the eighth spot (2%), followed closely by Doctor Who star and Barty Crouch, Jr. actor David Tennant (1%).

Rowling’s Lego portrait can still be viewed at Legoland Windsor where it stands to symbolize the creativity and imagination of children everywhere that Legoland officials hope to see grow.
