Alfie Enoch talks “How to Get Away with Murder” twists and turns and “Doctor Who”

by Sophie Reid · March 20, 2015

Alfie Enoch (Dean Thomas) recently starred in the hit US drama How to Get Away with Murder. In a new interview with Digital Spy, Alfie spoke about the popularity and twists and turns of the series, as well as the popularity of Harry Potter and his connection with Doctor Who.

In the interview, Alfie discussed the success of How to Get Away with Murder:

It’s been exciting! I had this very monastic life when I was in LA; we were working most days, so I wasn’t as aware as I might have been of the popularity of it, other than people saying it’s going well, people are watching it; it felt very much like getting on with it.

As much as it is exciting that it’s gone as well as it has, it’s felt a bit like business as normal – which is a testament to the environment that everyone managed to create on set, which was rather nice!

On the big murderer reveal and whether he knew who it was, Alfie said,

No one committed to an answer, really – everyone kept changing their minds every couple of weeks! We were responding to what was in the script as well [since] you’d start with one assumption and then think ‘maybe it’s this [other] person…’

Ultimately, we didn’t find out until it was in the episode. A couple of little things gave a suggestion of the way it was going to go – I think there was one scene in the seventh episode where I thought I knew the way it was going to go, so I sort of decided from there who[m] it was going to be. It was crazy, really, playing that level of personal uncertainty; you’re like… ‘is this what’s going to happen?’

Alfie also discussed the growing recognition of his role in the drama, saying,

Harry Potter [in which Alfred played Dean Thomas] was such a big thing; it was omnipresent. and I used to love the books before I was in the movie. But Murder‘s doing really well and [is] watched a lot in the States, and I think [since] I have more to do in the show, that makes sense to me [that I’m recognized more for the show]. It tends to happen more for Murder, and it happens a little bit back here [in the UK] as well, which I was pleasantly surprised about because I didn’t know if the show would make any impact back here and if people would be watching it, but people seem to be enjoying it, which is great.

Finally, Alfie touched on his family connection with Doctor Who:

I certainly looked up to not just my [d]ad but [also] his work. I was definitely aware that he’d been in the original Doctor Who and a lot of movies and continues to work – he does audiobooks now and has just turned 90, so that’s quite impressive!

That was always something I was aware of and something that appealed to me because I thought, ‘what a fun way of making a living that must be!’ That was always something that was twinkling in the distance – that would be a nice way of passing the time and making a living!

How to Get Away with Murder continues in the UK this Sunday, March 22 on Universal Channel.
