Five Times Our Favorite Characters Were at Their Worst: “Sorcerer’s Stone” Edition

by Rachael Dechert · July 16, 2015

Everyone has their good days and their bad ones. Our favorite Harry Potter characters are no exception.

1. Rubeus Hagrid

Hagrid is one of my favorite characters. He has a soft spot for animals no matter how dangerous their classification in Newt Scamander’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. When the opportunity to receive a dragon egg came along, in his excitement he accidentally let slip to a stranger (Quirreldemort) how to get past Fluffy.

2. Draco Malfoy

Draco came to Hogwarts thinking that some people are better than others. Though he was raised in pure-bloodist ways, his superiority attitude lands him on our list. He talked down to Ron because his family was poor. Not a good way to treat anyone for any reason.

3. Ron Weasley

In the beginning, Ron treated Hermione horribly. He was rude to her and even made her cry. Yes, he did save her from a troll, but he was the reason she was locked in the bathroom in the first place. Ron excluded Hermione and made fun of her. Bullying is never okay.

4. Hermione Granger

Hermione came to Hogwarts intent on learning everything her professors and the library could offer. Unfortunately, despite her many attempts, she was not very good at helping her fellow students learn. She came off as a know-it-all who thought herself smarter than everyone else. Later in the book we learn this is not true, but her smart-alecky ways land her on our list.

5. Harry Potter

Harry let himself be influenced by others. Both Hagrid and Ron said that Slytherin was full of Dark wizards. Harry decided to believe them instead of forming his own opinion. I’m not upset that he chose Gryffindor over Slytherin, but he could have tried to get to know some Slytherins instead of thinking that they were all replicas of Draco Malfoy.

Everyone has flaws, and our favorite characters are no different. They each grow and develop as the books go on, but it is important to remember who they were at the beginning so that we can appreciate how far they have come.
