Five Ways to Celebrate Hogwarts Start-of-Term from Home

by Taylor Simonds · September 1, 2016

It’s September 1.

For some people, that day means absolutely nothing. Just another Thursday, another day at work, or school, or whatever menial weekday activity happens to be planned. But we know better. September 1 is and always will be nostalgically cemented in our memories as the start of term for Hogwarts.

I will admit, I have been very lucky. I live in Florida, close enough to Universal Orlando that I can participate in our yearly tradition of dressing up in Hogwarts uniforms and riding the train from Diagon Alley to Hogwarts. However, I recognize that most people do not have the good fortune to participate in this tradition, so what are you supposed to do instead?? Sit around at home miserably wondering why your Hogwarts acceptance letter is still running ten years late? Allow me to offer some alternatives. Here are some fun ways to get into the Back-to-Hogwarts spirit from wherever you live!

  1. Make your own trolley snacks.

Bringing some Hogwarts-inspired treats to work or school is the perfect way to make your lunch more interesting. Personally, I’ve always thought that Cauldron Cakes and Pumpkin juice sound the most appealing, but some other easily replicable wizarding classics include Pumpkin Pasties (perfect for fall!) and Chocolate Frogs.

  1. Wear “socially appropriate” Hogwarts uniforms.

As much as I wish it were socially acceptable to wear robes in public, sometimes you just have to blend in a little bit. To do that without sacrificing your love for the Hogwarts aesthetic, try a more wearable version of the uniform with a white and black color palette and subtle accessories that reflect your House!

  1. Replace your school supplies with Hogwarts-inspired versions for the day (Or forever! Let your nerd flag fly!).

Just because there’s never a good reason not to use a quill pen. Or a pen shaped like a wand.

  1. Send yourself a Hogwarts letter.

So you’re ten years late on your Hogwarts acceptance letter? Definitely a fluke. Remedy that by ordering one here.

  1. Travel someplace new and exciting.

Hogwarts Express

To me, the most magical part of the Hogwarts Express is what it represents: the journey to someplace thrilling and wonderful. If you have the time, take a road trip today to someplace you’ve never experienced before! If you live in America, here’s a list of the most beautiful locations in each state to help get you started.

Happy First Day of Term, everyone! What will you be doing to celebrate?
