Lending a Human Voice to Nature: Alison Sudol on Arts and Activism

As if we needed more reasons to love Alison Sudol.

While most of you know her as Queenie Goldstein in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, or under her musical persona as A Fine Frenzy, many of you might not know that she is also a Goodwill Ambassador for the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.

Environmental news website Mongabay recently sat down with Sudol to discuss her activism and how it ties into the arts.

Art has a profound ability to connect people to their own hearts and to each other. A large challenge in activism, one that I’ve personally struggled with, is how to open my heart enough to care what happens to nature and how to maintain that openness despite the pain that it inevitably brings…Art is a way of lending a human voice to nature, it can remind us of the great beauty within ourselves that connects all living things.

Sudol goes on to state that she has been drawn to nature since she was a child. She credits her nanny for helping her discover her love by taking her on nature walks and showing her the magic of nature. Traveling as a musician also opened her eyes to the beauties of the world.

It did something to my soul, something I hadn’t realized I needed until I found myself seeking a natural space every time the bus arrived in a new city. Once I realized how much nature meant to me, and also realized how little success in my career fulfilled me, compared to that feeling, I knew I had to do something to help protect the natural world.

Sudol’s current conservation passions circle around oceans, species extinction, deforestation, and the impact of the current US government administration on American wildlife and climate change. She continues on to state that today’s younger generation makes her optimistic for the future of environmental conservation.

Sudol’s closing words are nothing short of inspirational.
