Seven Magical Things We Learned About the Second “Fantastic Beasts” Film Today!

by Sophie Reid · July 3, 2017

Who’s excited? Pottermore revealed this morning, July 3, that principal filming for the second Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them film begins today! As well as this reveal, they also dropped several tidbits of information about the film. Here are the highlights, confirming many things we’ve been wondering about for a while.

1. The second Fantastic Beasts film will see Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) escape from custody and see Dumbledore (Jude Law) step in to try to stop the Dark wizard, working alongside our Hufflepuff hero, Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne).

The latest from the studio is that, in the new film, Grindelwald will ‘make a dramatic escape’ from MACUSA custody, forcing Albus Dumbledore to join the wizarding world’s efforts to stop him.

The villainous Grindelwald has been busy ‘gathering more followers to his cause – elevating wizards above all non-magical beings’. Dumbledore will look to his former student Newt for help.

2. Tina Goldstein (Katherine Waterston), Queenie Goldstein (Alison Sudol), and Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler) will all be returning alongside Newt.

Newt will again be joined by Queenie and Tina Goldstein in the next film, as well as his No-Maj friend Jacob Kowalski, and a host of new characters. However, the mission against Grindelwald will ‘test their loyalties’ as the wizarding world becomes more divided and dangerous.

3. Credence (Ezra Miller) will also return to our screens in a “mysterious” way!

4. And we’ll also be treated to some brand new characters, including the following rather intriguing-sounding characters.

A bounty hunter called Grimmson, played by Icelandic actor Ingvar Sigurdsson; William Nadylam as a wizard called Yusuf Kama; Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Skender, the owner of a wizarding circus and Claudia Kim as one of the circus’s ‘featured attractions’.

5. Plus, Warner Bros. has now confirmed that Callum Turner will be featured as Newt’s brother, Theseus Scamander.

6. The film will pick up the story in 1927, months after the action of the first film.

7. And the action will take place in a number of locations, including London, Paris, and New York – so it looks like we might get to see MACUSA and our other favorite locations from the first film again, as well as the wizarding communities in London and Paris, confirming some of our earlier suspicions.

Apparently, the film will feature some “nods to the world of Harry Potter,” and we can’t wait to see how everything comes together in the film and what we might see that we recognize. Now that principal filming has begun, we’re sure that we will learn much about the film in the coming months – and we can’t wait!

We’ll also get to see Jude Law as Dumbledore for the first time, Zoë Kravitz will return as Leta Lestrange, and of course, Johnny Depp is coming back as Grindelwald.

The second Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them film is due to be released on November 16, 2018, and is directed by David Yates. We can’t wait to find out more! Let us know what you think about these revelations.

It’s high time I paid homage to the mighty MuggleNet. Where to start? I love the design, (I currently favour the ‘Dementor’ layout), the polls (I actually voted in the ‘Who’s the Half-Blood Prince?’ one), the pretty-much-exhaustive information on all books and films, the wonderful editorials (more insight there than in several companion volumes I shall not name), 101 Ways to Annoy Lord Voldemort (made me laugh aloud), the Wall of Shame (nearly as funny as some of the stuff I get)… pretty much everything. Webmaster Emerson, Eric, Jamie, Damon, Ben, Matthew, Rachel, Jaymz and Sharon, I salute you.
