Written in the Stars? What Astrology Says About Ron and Hermione’s Relationship
Ron and Hermione are potentially the most controversial couple in the Harry Potter series. J.K. Rowling even suggested that Hermione would be better suited with Harry in the end. Against their creator’s word, could Romione work out in the long run? I decided to look to the stars for answers. With the help of my friend and astrologer Jake from @jakesastrology, here’s a little Divination lesson for you as we break down the astrological compatibility of this “potentially problematic” couple.
A Brief Western Astrology Lesson: Sister Signs and Modalities
Signs in opposition to one another on the 12 points of the zodiac wheel have special relationships. Known as sister signs, these pairs share modality, or a common motivator. Modalities come in three forms: cardinal, fixed, and mutable. Here’s how Jake explains it:
Modality represents what motivates the signs. Cardinal signs (Aries, Libra, Cancer, and Capricorn) are motivated by instigating newness, and often take action first. Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius) can be set in their ways, but are great at seeing long-term goals through to completion. Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces) help prepare for the change Cardinal signs inspire through their resourceful, flexible nature.
Ron (Pisces) and Hermione (Virgo) represent mutable signs. This means they’re adaptable to change, which helps when you’re solving magical mysteries with the Boy Who Lived. Virgos and Pisces are also sister signs, and their opposing positions on the zodiac wheel can cause conflict. It makes sense almost immediately: Ron and Hermione bicker their way through seven books (and eight movies).
The Virgo/Pisces Axis
However, Ron and Hermione’s friendship with Harry might be the perfect environment for a romantic relationship to bloom. On the zodiac wheel, the Virgo/Pisces axis revolves around the concepts of “servitude” and “duty.” Ron and Hermione weave their friendship, and eventual romance, through supporting Harry. While the two are united in their Gryffindor-like loyalty, their approach to showing that loyalty is grounds for drama.
Jake says, “Virgos like Hermione create practical solutions to problems. Pisces like Ron have huge hearts, and find themselves more dedicated to a cause or an idea, rather than tangible problems.” We see this year after year at Hogwarts: Hermione’s best problem-solving tool is always the library, while Ron’s questions and on-the-fly ideas help Harry tune into the best mindset about whatever he’s up against. These two approaches might not coexist, as Jake explains. “Virgos can find Pisces impractical, and dismiss Pisces’ daydreamy personality as a waste of time. On the flipside, Pisces avoid controlling personalities in their choice of partner because they are scared of feeling held down or restrained.”
Patience and the “Emotional Range of a Teaspoon” Thing
Ron and Hermione’s compatibility reading quickly highlights a missing link between the two: patience. Ron acts on emotional extremes, which is a common Pisces trait. He’ll storm off in the middle of a life-or-death Horcrux hunt because he’s hungry and jealous, but he’ll also accidentally hex himself and puke up slugs to defend his friend. “Pisces need a partner who loves them enough to be patient with their inconsistent emotions,” says Jake. Well-intended as she may be, it’s no secret that Hermione is a bit impatient (“It’s Wingardium Levi-O-sa, not Levio-SAR”). Hermione shows her love through criticism, and “a Virgo’s friend or significant other needs to be able to take a beating, so to speak. They offer their advice and criticism without being asked first, and Pisces might not be up to the task,” explains Jake. Hermione seems to have it all together, like any Virgo. Usually, she leaves the jealous outbursts to Ron and approaches her love life with practicality. But her analytical nature can cause some pretty deep-seated insecurities when it comes to pursuing any romantic interests. “Hermione’s sharp eye for imperfection makes her the most aware of her own flaws. Virgos can see themselves as imperfect and therefore ‘bad.’ They need constant reassurance of others’ interests, and need someone to speak up if they’re attracted to them.” This could explain why Hermione refused to make any sort of move on Ron until it was a life-or-death situation.
Do the stars ship Romione?
In a big picture sense, the stars create an interesting dynamic between Ron and Hermione. While their issues are plain to see, their desires to care for others give them a strong common ground. Jake says, “I think they are ignorant as to how alike they are. Ron and Hermione love to solve problems, but their strategies aren’t the same.” In classic sister-sign fashion, one provides what the other lacks. Astrology is not an exact practice, and the stars are never certain. However, if Ron and Hermione stay loyal to Harry and their caring nature, the two might find harmony and lasting love! Aww.
