Matching “Harry Potter” Characters with Their Perfect Tea Flavors

by Monet Polny · June 2, 2020

What’s more perfect than a cup of tea? Harry Potter characters always seem to be drinking tea, but what flavors do they indulge in? It’s up to us, the readers, to make our best guesses. Whether you hypothesize that Voldemort secretly loves chocolate tea or that Dumbledore drinks some strange Bertie Botts-flavored tea, it’s fun to guess. So cozy up on the couch with a blanket and your own cup of tea, and see if you agree with our picks.

Hermione – Ginger Chai Tea

Hermione needs tea that will keep her feeling refreshed and energized after studying all night. Ginger tea packs a ton of flavor, and it’s ideal for a sore throat. I love to drink ginger tea when I’m studying because the bitter flavor always gives me a boost of energy. The addition of chai will lessen the tough taste of the ginger. Plus, every bookworm seems to drink chai tea. We can easily picture Hermione wrapped up in a Gryffindor blanket, studying by the light of her wand, with books spread everywhere and a cup of tea in her hands.

Harry – English Breakfast Tea

The Boy Who Lived needs a tea that will keep him alert all day. Harry is always running off on a secret mission or procrastinating on homework assignments, so he should choose a black tea. Black tea has the most amount of caffeine, so it’s good to drink if you need energy. Specifically, we think Harry would enjoy a no-fuss, classic English tea. English Breakfast is a tea you can get anywhere at any time. In fact, we expect it’s regularly served in the Great Hall during mealtimes. English Breakfast tea would pair perfectly with a meal Harry favors: porridge, toast with marmalade, and sausages.

Hagrid – Longjing (Dragon’s Well) Tea

Believe it or not, there’s actually a dragon tea. What could be more perfect for Hagrid, the man who wants a dragon of his very own? Longjing is a Chinese tea that, when translated, means “dragon’s well.” It’s a traditional green tea flavor, and you can buy it in the United States. Hopefully they stock this tea in Hogsmeade for our favorite gamekeeper. Maybe Hagrid would even send some over to Charlie Weasley in Romania.

Dumbledore – Lemon Sorbet Tea

Is it just us, or does Dumbledore seem to have a bit of sweet tooth? All the passwords to his office are candy-themed, and he is snacking on candy whenever Harry wants to speak with him. Well, there are plenty of sweet teas for Dumbledore. Lemon sorbet tea is a sweeter version of traditional lemon tea. It’s a combination of lemon and green tea, and depending on the weather at Hogwarts, Dumbledore can even have the tea iced. This eccentric flavor pairing is perfect for such a unique wizard.

Lupin – Chamomile Tea

For those long nights spent roaming as a werewolf, Lupin needs a calming tea. Chamomile tea will help Lupin relax and fall into a restful sleep. Lupin is a pretty anxious and tense person, and chamomile tea helps ease restlessness. Also, unlike the Wolfsbane Potion that he has to take, chamomile is one of the most popular teas that can be found anywhere. Since it’s an herbal tea, it has hardly any caffeine. Chamomile tea has many medicinal properties, so why not try it to calm down a werewolf?

McGonagall – Earl Grey Tea

With her serious and strict personality, McGonagall must be a no-nonsense tea drinker. Earl Grey is a tried and tested tea flavor, very traditional and easy to procure. With her busy teaching schedule, McGonagall needs a simple and no-fuss tea. Earl Grey tea can be prepared without milk, and it has a classic flavoring of orange and lemon citrus. Early Grey tea also has a surprising amount of caffeine, so it will keep McGonagall alert and energized while teaching classes. This tea is a classic favorite, and the same can be said for such a beloved professor. This is another tea that’s common enough to be featured in the Great Hall at breakfast time.
