Social Media Roundup: Guess Who Joined Instagram!

by Sarah Wylde · November 15, 2020

Welcome back, all you wonderful Muggles, witches, and wizards! It is time to catch up with some of the stars of the Wizarding World in this latest edition of MuggleNet’s Social Media Roundup! A lot has happened during the past two weeks, hasn’t it? During the past two weeks, there was the final voting and results in the United States presidential election, and November 11 was a day of remembering and celebrating military veterans. Plus, a Harry Potter actor joined Instagram, and another reached 1 million followers on Twitter.

It was hard to keep from being excited about this news: Harry Potter fans were overjoyed to find out that Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley) joined Instagram. In his first post, he shared a photo of himself holding his daughter, Wednesday. Grint has been on Instagram for just a short time and already has 3.1 million followers, breaking the Instagram record for the fastest time to a million followers.

The first guest on The ChickPeeps Vegan Podcast to be interviewed by Evanna Lynch (Luna Lovegood) and Robbie Jarvis (young James Potter, Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix) was Preacher Lawson. The standup comedian, actor, and singer talked about becoming vegan and more.

On her Instagram account, Bonnie Wright (Ginny Weasley) spoke to Reimagine LA co-chair Eunisses Hernandez about Measure J. Measure J would see 10% of the unrestricted revenue of Los Angeles County, California, US, go to a fund that “addresses the disproportionate impact of racial injustice through community investment and alternatives to incarceration, prohibiting using those funds for carceral systems or law enforcement agencies.”

James Phelps (Fred Weasley) took advantage of the nice weather, adding some more miles of biking and calling himself a biking nerd.

At the beginning of November were the final days of voting in the US presidential election. Wizarding World stars Katie Leung (Cho Chang) and Zoë Kravitz (Leta Lestrange) shared the importance of voting.

A few days later, the announcement was made that there will be a new president and vice president in the White House when the inauguration takes place in January of 2021. Joe Biden will be the new president of the United States, and Kamala Harris will be the vice president. This win was monumental for various reasons, mainly because Harris will be the first woman and first Black and Indian American woman to be elected as vice president. Extending their congratulations to the president-elect and vice president–elect were Ron Perlman (Gnarlak), Jason Isaacs (Lucius Malfoy), Matthew Lewis (Neville Longbottom), Katie Leung, and Zoë Kravitz.

Congratulations Mr. President elect Joe Biden, Ms. vice president select Kamala Harris. And most of all congratulations to America for returning to sanity.

A great day to be a parent.

Can one person solve coronavirus, climate change, racism or poverty? Of course not. But one person was making it all a hell of a lot worse and he just got his marching orders. Decency wins. Compassion wins. Humanity wins. #bidenharis2020

“Lest we forget.” On November 11, some Potter actors, including Jason Isaacs, James Phelps, Oliver Phelps, and Luke Youngblood (Lee Jordan), shared their support and appreciation for veterans of the armed forces. On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, countries around the world remember their sacrifices with silence as the “Last Post” is played by trumpet.

On #ArmisticeDay we honour and learn from the enormous number of lives lost – many would say needlessly – in WW1 and those survivors who carried the scars forever. The visible and invisible wounds of war surround us today and we all share a duty to help. https://t.co/pJt3pmcfyQ

A couple of tears watching the 🇬🇧#FestivalofRemembrance "I vow thee to my country" sent me over the edge. Well done all involved. #WeWillRememberThem @PoppyLegion

Did You Know

Quidditch started in the 11th century at a place called Queerditch Marsh, which is not marked on Muggle maps because wizards have made the place unplottable. Originally, it was quite a crude game played on broomsticks with just the Quaffle.

Potter History

January 3, 2006 – Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was named the highest-earning film internationally for 2005. It earned $850 million.

Potter Quote

“Cedric was a person who exemplified many of the qualities that distinguish Hufflepuff house. He was a good and loyal friend, a hard worker, he valued fair play. His death has affected you all, whether you knew him well or not. I think that you have the right, therefore, to know exactly how it came about. […] Cedric Diggory was murdered by Lord Voldemort.”
