Fan Focus: Kim – June 23, 2021

by Sarah Wylde · June 23, 2021

Welcome back to Fan Focus, where every two weeks, MuggleNet will introduce and highlight a Wizarding World fan by sharing their answers to various questions. With that said, it is time to meet a Harry Potter fan named Kim, a Ravenclaw living in Florida, who in true Ravenclaw fashion also included a magically worded essay that we have shared throughout the article.

How did you become a Wizarding World fan?

[Because of the] BOOKS! I enjoy the movies too.

I […] have spent the last 20 years as a Harry Potter FAN. It started when my son, who was in first grade at the time, brought the [Harry Potter and the] Sorcerer’s Stone home from the school library for me to read to him at bedtime. This was just a few months prior to the movie coming out, so the hype was in full swing. Because some of the content was a little much for my son, and the dialogue was occasionally tricky (Hagrid speaking), I got in the habit of reading a chapter or two ahead just so I knew what was coming in case a discussion was going to be necessary. Before I knew it, I was reading far more than a chapter or two ahead because I was being drawn in by this children’s story.

What is your favorite quote from the books or movies?

“Of course, it’s happening in your head…” Professor Albus Dumbledore.

I am forever quoting the books and movies and will gladly get into a lengthy discussion with a complete stranger who happens to mention Harry in my vicinity. While I do own all Harry Potter movies on DVD, I still insist on having the weekend marathons playing on at least one of our TVs, so I can keep track of when my favorite parts are on, and I check in with MuggleNet every day.

If you could spend a day with a character from Harry Potter or Fantastic Beasts, who would it be and why?

Fred and George [Weasley]. It would be full of laughter.

Who is your favorite Wizarding World character, and why?

Ugh… Neville, I love a good underdog story.

What is your favorite Harry Potter or Fantastic Beasts memory?

Going to the Wizarding World in Orlando.

As the years passed, reading the Harry Potter books and watching the movies had become a huge part of my son’s adolescence and our family traditions. […] We attended midnight release parties, built Harry Potter Lego sets, played Harry Potter Trivial Pursuit. When his father and I got married, we played the Sorcerer’s Stone soundtrack during dinner (this was just a few years before themed weddings became a thing, or believe me, I would have been all over that!) My son even asked me to read [Harry Potter and the] Deathly Hallows to him even though he was twelve by the time it came out, and I had stopped reading to him regularly about four years before. We had even made it part of our routine to reread each book before the corresponding movie came out. […] I will always be grateful for the magical bond the books created between my son and me.

If you could have one prop from the set of Harry Potter or Fantastic Beasts, what would it be?

The Mauraders Map.

Honestly, I cannot put in words all that Harry Potter means to my family and me. All I can say is… After all this time? ALWAYS!
