New UK Stamps Bring Magic to Muggle Mail

by Elyse Maupin-Thomas · October 12, 2023

If you’ve ever longed to receive your mail via the talons of one of those enchanting owls featured in the Harry Potter series, you now have the opportunity to be ever so slightly placated. Coming soon is a new collection of merchandise that will lend a modicum of magic to your mail, without the considerable drawback of feathers in your morning porridge.

On October 19, Britain’s Royal Mail will release a set of new stamps, as well as other exciting collectibles, featuring some of our favorite magical characters from the films. Similar to the Potter stamps released in 2018, the characters used to denote the value of each will be in the film series’s recognizable font, which will turn the “1” into the iconic lightning bolt shape.

Royal Mail partnered with Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products to develop this most fantastic new collection. “For more than two decades the characters in the Harry Potter series have captivated us and kept us enthralled,” commented David Gold, Royal Mail’s director of external affairs and policy. “Each stamp is a miniature masterpiece, a fitting tribute to mark the climactic end to the Battle of Hogwarts.”

Sixteen new stamps are being published, ten of which display the image of a main character with secondary characters in the background. Half of these stamps make up the “good” stamp pack for their images of protagonists, while the remaining five that make up the “evil” pack consist of antagonistic or embattled characters. Those wishing to purchase these packs can expect to see images of Alecto Carrow, Gregory Goyle, an anonymous Death Eater, Hermione Granger, Fenrir Greyback, Bellatrix Lestrange, Neville Longbottom, Luna Lovegood, Draco and Narcissa Malfoy, Minerva McGonagall, Harry Potter, Scabior, Kingsley Shacklebolt, Severus Snape, Lord Voldemort, and Fred, George, Ginny, Molly, and Ron Weasley.

The final six stamps of the 16 will be sold as a miniature sheet and feature dynamic illustrations of wizarding world creatures and beings. These include fan favorites such as Hermione’s cat, Crookshanks; Dobby the house-elf; and Harry’s owl, Hedwig.

Other offerings include special items like medals, gold stamps, postcards, envelopes, and framed prints. All are available for preorder now on the Royal Mail webpage.

Did You Know

Quidditch started in the 11th century at a place called Queerditch Marsh, which is not marked on Muggle maps because wizards have made the place unplottable. Originally, it was quite a crude game played on broomsticks with just the Quaffle.

Potter History

January 3, 2006 – Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was named the highest-earning film internationally for 2005. It earned $850 million.

Potter Quote

“Cedric was a person who exemplified many of the qualities that distinguish Hufflepuff house. He was a good and loyal friend, a hard worker, he valued fair play. His death has affected you all, whether you knew him well or not. I think that you have the right, therefore, to know exactly how it came about. […] Cedric Diggory was murdered by Lord Voldemort.”
