Alan Rickman Passes Away at the Age of 69

It is with great sadness that we must report that Alan Rickman has passed away at the age of 69. The Guardian reports that he had been suffering from cancer and passed away in London today.

Here is a brief statement from his family:

The actor and director Alan Rickman has died from cancer at the age of 69. He was surrounded by family and friends.

In addition to the Harry Potter films, Rickman was a part of many other beloved productions, including Love Actually, Galaxy Quest, Sense & Sensibility, and many more. It is without a doubt that today the world has lost one of its greatest actors.

The Telegraph reports that Rickman was unaware of the severity of his illness until recently, and had made no public announcement about his sickness.

We’ve suffered losses in the Potter community before, but this one is sure to hit the hardest so far for many fans. Whatever your thoughts on Snape – love him, hate him – I think we can all agree that as far as Alan Rickman is concerned, we’ll miss him. Always.

Today, raise your wands to a great actor and our Snape. Remember his life and his legacy. Goodbye, Alan.

I've been making magic at MuggleNet since 2012, when I first joined the staff as a News intern. I've never wavered from the declaration in my childhood journal, circa October 2000: "I LOVE Harry Potter! If I clean my room, my mom says she'll make me a dinner a wizard would love!" Proud Gryffindor; don't hate.
