Five Great Married Couples

Happy Spouses Day! Last year, I looked at Arthur and Molly, so this time, I would like to highlight some of the less well-known married couples.

Bill and Fleur

Although Bill and Fleur are not one of the more notable couples in the Harry Potter series, their relationship is filled with great moments. They brought out the best in each other, and this is particularly highlighted with Fleur’s character development. She goes from being someone people looked down on to someone who stood by her husband and fought for what was right. Even before they were married, Fleur fought for her husband when she defied everyone’s expectations and proved that she loved him no matter what he looked like.

‘You thought I would not weesh to marry him? Or per’aps, you hoped?’ said Fleur, her nostrils flaring. ‘What do I care how he looks? I am good-looking enough for both of us, I theenk! All these scars show is zat my husband is brave.’” (HBP 623)

Lupin and Tonks

Their relationship was filled with obstacles from the beginning, including Lupin’s belief that he was too old, too poor, and too dangerous. They managed to overcome this and had a brief moment of happiness together before their unfortunate death in the Second Wizarding War.

‘It’s different,’ said Lupin, barely moving his lips and looking suddenly tense. ‘Bill will not be a full werewolf. The cases are completely —’
‘But I don’t care either, I don’t care!’ said Tonks, seizing the front of Lupin’s robes and shaking them. ‘I’ve told you a million times…’” (HBP 623–624)

James and Lily

Although James was a bit arrogant and full of himself in his teens, he matured and became a better man. The two of them got together and were happy for several years before Severus Snape and Voldemort got in the way. Nevertheless, they loved each other and were a great couple.

‘She started going out with him in seventh year,’ said Lupin.
‘Once James had deflated his head a bit,’ said Sirius.
‘And stopped hexing people just for the fun of it,’ said Lupin.” (OotP 671)

Petunia and Vernon

They may have treated Harry horribly, but they stood by each other. Petunia supported Vernon with his work and helped take care of his family, particularly his sister, Marge, whenever she visited. Likewise, Vernon must have loved Petunia a lot to put up with Harry’s magical incidents, including “owls treating the place like a rest home, puddings exploding, half the lounge destroyed, Dudley’s tail, Marge bobbing around on the ceiling, and that flying Ford Anglia” for the ten years Harry lived with them and during the summer holidays (OotP 39).

Lucius and Narcissa

Like Petunia and Vernon, these two are pretty awful. However, they must have loved each other tremendously to be able to survive what Voldemort put their family through. They evidently loved their son and did whatever they could to save him.

Lucius and Narcissa Malfoy running through the crowd, not even attempting to fight, screaming for their son.” (DH 725)
