Maggie Smith and Helena Bonham Carter nominated for Emmy Awards!

The 2014 Emmy Award nominees were announced this morning, and two Potter alumnae have scored nominations!

Dame Maggie Smith was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her role as Dowager Countess Violet Crawley. She goes head to head in the category with co-star Joanne Froggatt, who portrays Anna, Lady Mary Crawley’s maid, in the show. And speaking of Lady Mary, actress Michelle Dockery also happened to be nominated for Best Actress in a Drama Series. Fellow Downton actor Jim Carter also received a nomination for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Mr. Carson, while Downton Abbey itself was nominated for Best Drama Series.

Helena Bonham Carter was also nominated, in the category of Best Actress in a Miniseries or Movie, for her role as Elizabeth Taylor in the biopic Burton and Taylor.

The Emmy Awards will be broadcast on Monday, August 25. Congratulations to them both, and good luck! Will you be tuning in? Whom do you hope will win? Is there anyone you think should have been nominated but wasn’t? Let us know in the comments below!

I've been making magic at MuggleNet since 2012, when I first joined the staff as a News intern. I've never wavered from the declaration in my childhood journal, circa October 2000: "I LOVE Harry Potter! If I clean my room, my mom says she'll make me a dinner a wizard would love!" Proud Gryffindor; don't hate.
