Natalia Tena’s “The Refugees” nearing television premiere!
Spanish television network laSexta is gearing up for its premiere of sci-fi drama The Refugees (Spanish: Refugiados). Starring Natalia Tena (Nymphadora Tonks), whose involvement we announced in May of last year, the upcoming series is a co-production between Atresmedia and BBC Worldwide along with Bambú Producciones. Written and recorded in English, the program will first be broadcast (with translation) to Spanish-speaking audiences on laSexta with a BBC airdate to follow for the UK. According to Spanish newspaper El País, each of the eight episodes will cap out at around 45-50 minutes in length.
BBC Worldwide executive producer Ben Donald, who was in attendance at the 2014 FesTVal de Vitoria-Gasteiz where The Refugees was previewed to festivalgoers, had this to say:
We’re in a time in which television series are focusing on human emotions, but with Refugiados, we’re going to be talking about much more.
Donald also noted that the idea of The Refugees was so well received that BBC intends to pursue co-production of additional programs in more countries such as Australia.
LaSexta, which released a gallery of cast photos you can view below as well as a brief teaser trailer (in Spanish), gives this summary of the series:
Humanity is experiencing the greatest exodus in history. Three billion people from the future have traveled to the present, fleeing an imminent global disaster. All of the refugees must follow two rules: They cannot talk about the future, and they cannot contact their families.
