Bookworms and Jocks Come Together at Simon Fraser University
The Simon Fraser University (SFU) Marauders are heading into their third season of Quidditch this fall and are helping prove that Muggle Quidditch isn’t simply for a bunch of nerds – it is a competitive and physically demanding sport. Rhyss Gardiva, member of the team, tells the Now Newspaper how he once chipped a tooth while playing and gave another player a concussion while doing so.
Gardiva and teammate Taylor Mykler-Winkler report how their team has a mixture of Harry Potter fans and athletes.
Mykler-Winkler states,
It’s full contact co-ed. There are some girls on our team who are five foot four, maybe 100 pounds, and they’re on the same field as this six[-]foot[-]tall ex-football player.
Just this March, the Marauders placed fourth in the Canadian Quidditch Nationals, after beating the Alberta Clippers. This was an exciting victory for SFU since Alberta has beaten them three times before, and also has members of the Canadian national Quidditch team.
With their second season under their belt, the Marauders are done with matches until this fall but are planning on participating in fantasy tournaments this summer. They’re looking for more players to join next season and are recruiting both bookworms and athletes alike.
