Emma Watson to Star in “The Circle”

Emma Watson has landed her next big role! After she wraps Beauty and the Beast, Emma will start work on The Circle, which will also star Tom Hanks.

Based on the best-selling novel by Dave Eggers, The Circle tells the story of Mae Holland, a young woman hired at the world’s largest Internet company – the Circle. But Mae soon realizes that her dream job might just have a few dark sides. Here’s the book’s description from Amazon:

When Mae Holland is hired to work for the Circle, the world’s most powerful internet company, she feels she’s been given the opportunity of a lifetime. The Circle, run out of a sprawling California campus, links users’ personal emails, social media, banking, and purchasing with their universal operating system, resulting in one online identity and a new age of civility and transparency. As Mae tours the open-plan office spaces, the towering glass dining facilities, the cozy dorms for those who spend nights at work, she is thrilled with the company’s modernity and activity. There are parties that last through the night, there are famous musicians playing on the lawn, there are athletic activities and clubs and brunches, and even an aquarium of rare fish retrieved from the Marianas Trench by the CEO. Mae can’t believe her luck, her great fortune to work for the most influential company in the world—even as life beyond the campus grows distant, even as a strange encounter with a colleague leaves her shaken, even as her role at the Circle becomes increasingly public. What begins as the captivating story of one woman’s ambition and idealism soon becomes a heart-racing novel of suspense, raising questions about memory, history, privacy, democracy, and the limits of human knowledge.

Director James Ponsoldt said of Emma’s casting,

Emma Watson is one of my favorite actors, and her incredible talent, sensitivity, and deep intelligence will bring an electric energy to ‘The Circle.’

Between this, Beauty and the Beast, Regression, Colonia, and more we won’t be missing Emma from the big screen for a long time to come! Have you read the book? How do you think she’ll fare in the role of Mae?

I've been making magic at MuggleNet since 2012, when I first joined the staff as a News intern. I've never wavered from the declaration in my childhood journal, circa October 2000: "I LOVE Harry Potter! If I clean my room, my mom says she'll make me a dinner a wizard would love!" Proud Gryffindor; don't hate.
