Social Roundup: J.K. Rowling presents “The Cursed Child”

by Kevin Assam · June 28, 2015

First came Pottermore. Then we learned that the  beloved Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them would return the wizarding world once more to the big screen. Now, Harry Potter will complete the hat trick with its third endeavor, a stage production titled Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

It started as a sentimental Thursday morning…

Today is a very special day for two reasons. Firstly, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone was published in the UK 18 years ago!

— J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) June 26, 2015

…and quickly turned into a “twitterstorm” with the announcement of the latest addition to the Harry Potter franchise.

I'm also very excited to confirm today that a new play called Harry Potter and the #CursedChild will be opening in London next year.

— J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) June 26, 2015

It will tell a new story, which is the result of a collaboration between writer Jack Thorne, director John Tiffany and myself. #CursedChild

— J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) June 26, 2015

I've had countless offers to extend Harry's story over the years, but Jack, John and Sonia Friedman are a dream team! #CursedChild

— J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) June 26, 2015

Why not a novel format you ask? She got to that too.

To answer one inevitable (and reasonable!) question – why isn't #CursedChild a new novel? – I am confident that when audiences see the play

— J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) June 26, 2015

they will agree that it was the only proper medium for the story. #CursedChild

— J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) June 26, 2015

Naturally Jo did not want us to lose our heads…

I don't want to say too much more, because I don't want to spoil what I know will be a real treat for fans. #CursedChild

— J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) June 26, 2015

…so we of course did. Rumors of it being a prequel were flying fast.

A Harry Potter prequel is coming and it's getting here before Fantastic Beats #CursedChild http://t.co/r02v8zhrBU pic.twitter.com/JsnqV1P397

— The Independent (@Independent) June 26, 2015

Which meant that Jo had to do quite a bit of rumor control…

NOT a prequel. Not. A. Prequel. #CursedChild https://t.co/OLAucrEppE

— J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) June 27, 2015

…repeatedly.

IT'S NOT A… oh, will someone else please take over? https://t.co/nXT82YF1xa

— J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) June 27, 2015

Plus a few more hilarious times for good measure.

Sadly, not a prequel. I thought I'd said that at some point. Anyway. Not a prequel. https://t.co/EPOmpVXFcl

— J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) June 27, 2015

You are getting very warm indeed when you say that it is *possible* that #CursedChild isn't a prequel. https://t.co/B6QPUV0mxa

— J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) June 27, 2015

https://twitter.com/gorgosprizza/status/614904063663173633

We could feel the frustration building.

You're right, I have been guilty of shameful ambiguity in this matter. It isn't a prequel. https://t.co/ep6InUxL20

— J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) June 27, 2015

You know what? I'm starting to wonder. Maybe it is. https://t.co/Vh7yaCKP2c

— J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) June 27, 2015

*I must not swear on Twitter. I must not swear on Twitter…* https://t.co/AeYLHzWjDL

— J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) June 27, 2015

But thankfully there was at last an end to the madness.

THANK YOU! https://t.co/Jx4FuZ87g0

— J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) June 27, 2015

It has been a huge pleasure to share with them (and soon, with you!) this untold part of Harry's story. #CursedChild

— J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) June 26, 2015

There was also of course the big ruling from the US Supreme Court for which some of the cast expressed their solidarity with the decision.

Finally, there was Matthew Lewis’ 26th birthday. Which was readily celebrated across social media.

Holy shit, I’m 26? Happy birthday to me. And to my best friend from the Norfolk area, @samclaflin. #checkshirtbuddies pic.twitter.com/N7BhmTZoBK
