Nine Thoughts on the New “Fantastic Beasts” Trailer

by Rachael Dechert · April 11, 2016

Last night, we got a new trailer for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and it is amazing. I wasn’t truly excited for this movie until I saw the trailer. I can’t wait to explore this new world and see what creatures we get to learn more about.  I also can’t wait to see what the SpeakBeasty team has to say about it on their next podcast. So let’s talk about this new footage from the movie.

1. Transatlantic travel

New York FB

The trailer opens with Newt on a boat headed to New York, and he gets off at a Muggle immigration checkpoint. Does this mean that there is no magical way to get across the ocean? If Cornelius Fudge wanted to make a political visit to the MACUSA did he have to fly on a plane? That would be fun to watch.

2. Expulsion

Newt Scamander was expelled from Hogwarts for “endangering human lives with a beast.” What exactly is going on there? What beast did he bring to Hogwarts and what happened? I need the full story immediately. If he was expelled, why does he still have a wand? Did he make a new one? Is that why it’s vegan? I have so many questions about this. Also, the Albus Dumbledore name-drop made me feel very excited. I know that we probably won’t get to see him in this movie, but it’s fun to think about what Dumbledore is doing while all of this happens.

3. Muggle-Worthy Mode

So Newt’s suitcase has a Muggle-Worthy setting that makes the contents appear normal for Muggles. That is amazing. I need one of these for my next vacation so that I could take my cats and my clothes. I could take my cats on a plane, and I wouldn’t need to check a bag. That would be fantastic! Everything should have a Muggle-Worthy setting. Imagine how great that would be on a computer.

4. Speakeasy

When I think of the 1920s and New York, speakeasies are the first thing to pop into my head. I was so excited to get to see one in this trailer. Tina looks so gorgeous and powerful walking in there while Newt just awkwardly trails behind her. I love it.

5. Dish party

There is one scene where Tina and Queenie are making dinner and Tina summons the dishes. They all gracefully fly over to her. This moment just makes me really appreciate how beautiful magic can be. She is summoning plates, and all I can think is “Wow, that’s amazing.” It’s moments like these that make me remember just why I love the Harry Potter universe.

6. Niffler

This Niffler looks adorable, and I want one. I’m so happy that they showed us a shot of one, though. It’s so cute. I’d let it steal my coin purse if it came up to me.

7. Apparition

Newt does this amazing thing where he runs to the edge of a tall building, jumps off, and then manages to Apparate. It’s like Apparition parkour or something. He must have spent hours perfecting that move. I wish I were that cool.

8. Suitcase time

Suitcase FB

This was my favorite scene in the trailer. Newt jumps out of bed fully clothed and just climbs down into his suitcase. Jacob is laying in bed reading Cassandra and Her Cat Gustavus, which is the best book title ever. He just has this confused expression on his face the whole time. The facial expressions in this trailer are hilarious.

9. “Hedwig’s Theme”

I can’t wait until we get an original theme for this movie, but hearing “Hedwig’s Theme” at the end really punched me in the gut. It really helped to tie this movie in with the Harry Potter movies. It’s funny how those few notes can make me tear up when played at the right time. I don’t really want them to have it in the movie, but it works great in the trailer.
