The Top Five Underrated “Potter” Baby Names!

by Amy Luder · June 6, 2016

As the original Potter generation is growing older and having children of their own, you probably don’t have to look far these days to find someone with a Harry Potter-inspired baby name. In any Potter circle you might come across an abundance of Harrys, Rons, Freds, Georges, and even the occasional Hermione, Luna, or Neville. These are all great name choices for children, but what if your name choice is taken? Or perhaps you already have a child with a Potter name and are searching for another, more unique, name? Maybe you want to use a Potter name but don’t want your non-Potter friends to know how much of a Potterhead you really are? Fear not! MuggleNet has compiled a list of the top five underrated Harry Potter baby names!

1) Minerva

We all want to raise strong, independent women, and what better way to inspire your daughter than by naming her after one of the strongest women in the entire series? There’s no doubt that Minerva McGonagall is a force to be reckoned with, but she is also kind, loyal, and incredibly sassy! Traits that any parent can be proud of!

Dame Maggie Smith - Minerva McGonagall

Looking for a more contemporary name? You could always shorten Minerva to Minnie, which we think is an incredibly cute baby name!

2) Aberforth

It’s safe to say that Harry, Ron, and Hermione would have been caught by Dementors in Hogsmeade Village, or would have been further tortured by Bellatrix Lestrange at Malfoy Manor, if it hadn’t been for Aberforth Dumbledore’s quick thinking. Aberforth also nobly allowed his pub to be used as a passageway into Hogwarts right under the Death Eaters’ noses. We think that his valiant acts make him worthy of having a child named after him!

Ciaran Hinds - Aberforth Dumbledore

Is Aberforth too unusual for you? We think Abe would be a perfect Potter name!

3) Molly

Mrs. Weasley will always be one of our favorite characters in the Harry Potter series. Molly loves fiercely and unconditionally. She is an incredible mother who will do anything for her loved ones, even if it means endangering her own life. Molly always puts everyone’s needs ahead of her own and treated Harry no differently from her own children. She is a true role model for both children and adults alike.

Julie Walters - Molly Weasley

Molly makes a beautiful, timeless baby girl’s name, and we would be proud to name our daughter after such a great character!

4) Rubeus

It is apparent throughout the Harry Potter series that Rubeus Hagrid is incredibly loyal to his friends. He is loving, he is caring, and he is self-sacrificing. Hagrid values any animal life almost as much as he values human life and would happily nurse any creature, no matter how big or small, back to health. We think naming a child after him would be a fitting tribute to him!

hagrid 2

We think that Rubeus is a perfect, unique name on its own, but if you’re looking for something less obviously Potter, how about Reuben or Ruby?

5) Nymphadora

Nymphadora Tonks is another strong, courageous character in the Harry Potter series. At a young age, she became one of the top Aurors in the Ministry. She loved Remus unconditionally, even in the face of adversity and regardless of his attempts to sway her. Nymphadora fearlessly fought in the Second Wizarding War despite having a new baby because she knew it was worth risking her son growing up orphaned if that meant he didn’t grow up in a world filled with evil and hatred. We would be honored to have a daughter named after her!

Natalia Tena - Nymphadora Tonks

Like Tonks herself, maybe you’re not a big fan of the name Nymphadora? Dora would be an equally fitting tribute!

Honorary mention: Rose

Although we don’t know much about Rose Granger-Weasley, we do know that with Ron and Hermione as her parents, she is likely to be kind, loyal, intelligent, and witty! Rose is a classic baby name, and we are excited to see more of Rose Granger-Weasley in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. We anticipate great things from her!

Do you have a child with a Harry Potter-inspired name? Would you name your child after a different character? Let us know in the comments!
