Bill Nighy Set to Receive Cinequest’s Prestigious Maverick Spirit Award

Known by Harry Potter fans for his role as Rufus Scrimgeour in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1, actor Bill Nighy has built a full and eclectic résumé. Now, his contributions to the entertainment industry are set to be honored by Cinequest.

Cinequest will present Nighy with its most prestigious award, the Maverick Spirit. The accolade aims to commend Nighy on his dedication to craft, his meticulous preparation without care for “process” or “method,” and his commitment to the film industry. In an old BAFTA interview, Nighy commented on his business-like approach to acting as he leaves the analysis to drama teachers and stage critics.

I think what is exciting is when you realize your fellow actor is entirely prepared. If everybody is prepared, then you can start to rock.

Leaving his mark onstage, on the big screen, and on the small screen, Nighy has left no performance stone unturned, appearing in a wide range of productions, including Love Actually, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. The Maverick Spirit Award presentation will take place on March 6, 2019, at the California Theatre, San Jose. Tickets cost $20 and must be booked in advance through Cinequest. The event includes the US premiere of Sometimes Always Never, a conversation with Nighy, and the award presentation.
