Our Guide to Some of the Best Tips and Tricks for “Harry Potter: Wizards Unite”

by Bethan Roberts · June 25, 2019

If you aren’t playing Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, what are you waiting for? The list of countries with access is only growing, so we’ve amassed all the tips you need to make the most of this exciting new release!

First off is customizability. Each player can create a profile for their in-game avatar that includes their Hogwarts House, their profession, and even their own wand. Players are able to mix and match wand components, such as wand core and flexibility, to create their own tailored wand, or even mimic their favorite character’s!

Another fun feature is the professions. After reaching Level 6, players will unlock the ability to embark on a career path as an Auror, headed by Harry Potter, a Professor, led by Professor McGonagall, or a Magizoologist, directed by Hagrid. The three leads will guide the players through skill trees to increase their abilities during battles, but be warned – each profession has its own set of strengths and weaknesses. Aurors, for example, do immense damage and are the best at taking on the Dark Arts, but they cannot heal themselves, unlike Magizoologists, who have healing abilities.

Though you are able to switch professions in the game, you can only play as one at any one time, so it’s advisable that when attacking high-level Fortresses, players team up and spread themselves out across the different professions to maximize the chances of success.

Another useful tool is potions brewing. Players will pick ingredients up as they go or grow them in Greenhouses, which can be turned into potions, which can inflict damage, heal, and even boost player abilities. There’s a nifty trick for anyone on a time-crunch through the Master Notes function. If players tap on the brewing cauldron’s handle and are able to correctly guess the correct sequence of patterns, the brewing time will be reduced by 15%!

One exciting feature of the game is Portkey Portmanteaus. Portmanteaus can be picked up on the map and once opened, will whisk the player off to a famous Harry Potter location! Players can unlock these by both using a key and walking a specified distance. Players will receive a gold key that’s best left to the Portmanteaus that require shorter distances to unlock since it has an unlimited number of uses. Silver keys can be earned but are only able to be used once.

As exciting as this all is, one thing that players mustn’t forget is to keep an eye on their spell energy levels. Unlike in other mobile games such as Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, spell energy doesn’t naturally replenish itself over time, so players will need to visit Inns and Greenhouses, as found on the map, in order to refill so they are ready to battle, whether in Fortresses or against Confoundables.

Players should be aware that codenames cannot be changed and can only be used by one player so must be chosen wisely!

Players with rooted or jailbroken devices should also be careful since they won’t be able to access the game. For players affected, Niantic is advising checking in with their help center for further information.

For players in the United States, there’s even more exciting news, with 10,000 AT&T and Cricket Wireless stores being designated as Fortresses and Inns. These sponsored Inns and Fortresses will offer extra rewards such as enhanced XP and spell energy, exclusive quests, and more virtual enemies compared to other Inns and Fortresses. In conjunction, over 200 Simon Malls, Mills, and Premium Outlets will also become sponsored Fortresses and Inns, with all the same benefits.

Players can already benefit at AT&T stores, which have been Fortresses since June 21, but will need to wait until July 15 for Cricket Wireless stores to present themselves as Inns.

Niantic Teams with AT&T and Simon to Bring the Magic of Harry Potter: Wizards Unite™ to Real-World Retail Locations

Interactive Augmented Reality Integrations Extend to 10,000 AT&T and Cricket Wireless Stores and 200+ Simon Properties Across the United States

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF. -- June 24th, 2019 -- Niantic has announced collaborations with AT&T and Simon to integrate special real-world activations in the augmented reality mobile game, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite™, across retail locations around the United States. Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is an augmented reality (AR) real-world mobile game co-developed by Niantic, Inc. and WB Games under the Portkey Games label. The game is now available on the App Store, Google Play, and Samsung Galaxy Store, in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, as well as many other countries. The game will be launching in additional countries soon.

“We’re excited to team up with AT&T and Simon to create a variety of custom Harry Potter: Wizards Unite gameplay experiences for players visiting the thousands of retail stores and large-scale shopping destinations around the United States,” said Omar Tellez, vice president of strategic partnerships, Niantic. “Real[-]world games like Harry Potter: Wizards Unite are all about engaging with the world around you, creating new and unique opportunities for players to interact within their neighborhoods, towns and cities like never-before [sic].”

Wizards and Witches playing Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will be able to earn additional rewards and encounter more virtual enemies at Inns and Fortresses placed at more than 10,000 AT&T and Cricket Wireless retail stores beginning June 21 and July 15, respectively. All AT&T sponsored locations will give players more XP at Fortresses and more spell energy at Inns, than any other non-sponsored location in the US. Plus, players will be able to take part in exclusive, limited[-]time quests only available at AT&T and Cricket locations to help them level up faster. AT&T stores now also feature more than 25 exclusive Harry Potter: Wizards Unite consumer products like battery packs, fast chargers and more, as well as Wizarding World imagery for the perfect AR photo backdrop. Flagship AT&T stores in Chicago and San Francisco feature expanded Harry Potter: Wizards Unite build-outs where players can immerse themselves in the augmented reality experience. In addition, AT&T will also be a key sponsor at Harry Potter: Wizards Unite real-world events in the future. For a limited time, beginning July 15, new customers purchasing at Cricketwireless.com will have the opportunity to receive up to $50 worth of in-game Galleons as a gift with purchase.

“AT&T is proud to collaborate with Niantic and WB Games, true leaders in augmented reality and real-world mobile gaming, to continue to bring consumers closer to the content they love,” said Valerie Vargas, SVP, Advertising and Creative Services, AT&T. “AT&T’s network helps us give Wizards across the country new ways to interact with their most beloved Harry Potter characters.”

Beginning today, Simon Malls®, Mills® and Premium Outlets® will feature an amplified Harry Potter: Wizards Unite game play [sic] experience with increased rewards and elusive enemies. Simon’s 200+ US shopping destinations will each have multiple sponsored Inns and Fortresses, giving players more XP and more spell energy than any other non-sponsored location in the US. This, coupled with both indoor and outdoor locations and plenty of shopping and dining options to enjoy while playing, makes Simon shopping destinations one of the best places to spend a day playing Harry Potter: Wizards Unite. In the future, select Simon properties will host real-world events and QR quests for Harry Potter: Wizards Unite.

“Simon is committed to creating fun, innovative, real-life experiences for our shoppers, and Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is exactly the type of cutting-edge activation our customers get excited about playing. We believe the elevated gameplay we're offering as a part of the program will drive traffic and excitement for our properties as well as the brands and retailers at Simon," said Lee Sterling, Senior Vice President Brand Management, Simon.

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is built on the Niantic Real World Platform, and created using the game design and content creation expertise of WB Games San Francisco, under the Portkey Games label. As new recruits of the Statute of Secrecy Task Force, players will investigate the chaotic magical activity that is leaking into the Muggle world and work together to solve the mystery of this Calamity. Players will be able to explore their real-world neighborhoods and cities to discover mysterious artifacts, cast spells, and encounter fantastic beasts and iconic characters along the way.

Potter Quote

“Well – it’s just that you seem to be laboring under the delusion that I am going to – what is the phrase? – come quietly. I am afraid I am not going to come quietly at all, Cornelius. I have absolutely no intention of being sent to Azkaban. I could break out, of course – but what a waste of time, and frankly, I can think of a whole host of things I would rather be doing.”
