Why I Ship Dean and Seamus

We all have our favorite non-canon Harry Potter ships. Maybe you want Harry and Hermione to date, or maybe you hope Hagrid and Madame Maxime will never be apart. One of the most popular unrequited ships of the series is Dean and Seamus. Longtime best friends, some fans have suggested that the pair develop romantic feelings throughout the books. Since the series is told from Harry’s point of view and Harry is too busy saving the world, it is reasonable to assume that Harry misses what is happening between Dean and Seamus.

I usually support canon ships because I like to see the couples and their relationships evolve over time. However, I like Dean and Seamus’s friendship the most. It’s often that the best friendships make for the best romantic relationships. For example, Ron and Hermione become a strong couple due to their trust and longtime friendship. Harry and Ginny are another example of this; Ginny has a crush on Harry, but they stay friends for years and gain affection for each other in this casual way. Dean and Seamus hit it off as soon as they arrive at Hogwarts, and they remain inseparable. They always support each other and keep each other in good humor. They have one of the most unproblematic relationships in the series.

Since Dean and Seamus don’t date anyone until Book 6, I initially thought the pair would start dating. I was confused when Dean and Ginny first started dating. Now that I’m informed on different sexualities and orientations, I’m convinced that Dean is bisexual or pansexual. This is just my theory, and it doesn’t matter if it’s true or not. I love Dean’s character no matter what, and his sexuality isn’t the focus of the series. His romantic interests don’t define him, but I think it’s interesting to speculate. Dean and Seamus could be a loving and supportive pair either as friends or something more.

I love how much Dean and Seamus have in common. The pair love sports, especially Quidditch, and share a similar sense of humor. They laugh at the same jokes, which is usually when Seamus catches something on fire. This is a small detail, but I love how the movies show that whenever Seamus blows something up, Dean laughs, but he also checks on his friend to make sure he’s okay. It’s sweet that Dean and Seamus always check up on each other.

One of the aspects of the Harry Potter fandom that I love is how almost everyone supports Deamus, the ship name of Dean and Seamus. It’s nice that, even though everyone argues over the popular canon ships, everyone thinks Dean and Seamus could be a terrific couple. Even the actor who played Seamus, Devon Murray, supports the concept. No one would argue that Dean and Seamus have one of the most healthy and loving relationships in the series. Even when Dean disagrees with how Seamus treats Harry in Book 5, they still remain friends despite their differences. I like that readers get to see how Dean and Seamus would act even in the midst of a disagreement. Dean and Seamus’s friendship never wavers. When Seamus apologizes to Harry later, I’ve always wondered if Dean had something to do with that apology.

One of my favorite aspects of Dean and Seamus’s friendship is how the pair truly make each other better. Dean keeps Seamus’s temper and pride under control, while Seamus makes Dean laugh and have fun. They balance each other out, similar to Harry and Ron. Also similar to Harry and Ron’s friendship, Dean and Seamus’s friendship only becomes stronger as the book series goes on. People always say Harry and Ron have one of the greatest friendships in literature, but I think Dean and Seamus’s friendship is just as powerful. In my eyes, I’ll always see this pair as a couple even if it’s not canon. What’s wonderful though is even if you don’t support Deamus, everyone can love their genuine and healthy friendship.

Monet Polny

"Harry Potter" has been my ultimate inspiration as a writer. Everything from the characters to the plot dynamics has impacted my writing style and aided me in making the decision to major in creative writing. I wanted to become Newt Scamander's protegee and work with magical creatures, but becoming a writer is the next best career choice.
