We Tried Out the Harry Potter: Magic Caster Wand

by Daisy Perez · December 3, 2022

Wizarding World fans can now purchase the latest Wizarding World smart technology product – the Harry Potter: Magic Caster Wand – at HarryPotterMagicCasterWand.com, Harry Potter New York, the Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood, the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London, Platform 9 3⁄4 at King’s Cross, the Harry Potter Shop at Heathrow Airport (T5), and the Harry Potter Photographic Exhibition at the London Film Museum.

Each retails for $149.99 in the US or £149.00 in the UK (excluding Northern Ireland). There are four wand designs, three of which are currently available: Loyal, Defiant, and Honourable. The fourth, Heroic, was available exclusively to Harry Potter Fan Club members and is now sold out.

MuggleNet had the opportunity to attend a demo session presented by product lead Mike Goslin, giving us an exclusive first look at these much-anticipated Magic Caster Wands.

The presentation began with an overview of the free companion Harry Potter: Magic Caster Wand app, which we were informed is required for full functionality. It connects with compatible smart home and Bluetooth devices that will generate exciting lighting and sound effects when the wand is in use. We were shown the very straightforward account setup in the app and how to use the main feature of the app, the spell book, which provides tutorial instructions, unlocks new spells and actions as you level up, and responds to over 50 canon spells from the films and books.

We then got to take a closer look at the Defiant wand, which Goslin demonstrated has a touch-sensitive area near the top of the holding area, which when activated makes the wand glow blue.

This was then followed by some spell demonstrations, and we definitely had some favorites:

Colovaria
When this spell is cast, the smart connected lighting changes color. The lights first default to the user’s House color (in the demo, the user was a Ravenclaw, so the lights flashed blue), followed by the other House colors.

Meteolojinx
This weather spell conjures up a loud weather storm on the smart TV video while flashing the smart connected lighting in the room.

Expecto Patronum
When setting up the app on their device, the wand user selects their Patronus animal, and when this spell is cast, they can see a clip of the Patronus running around the screen on the smart TV connected to the app.

After the very informative presentation, it was our turn to test out the Defiant wand ourselves.

The first thing we learned when holding the wand is that it can be a little tricky to hold correctly, but with the guidance of Goslin and the tutorial we were shown on the app, we finally got it. The trick is to hold the sensitive area of the wand while performing the desired spell gesture and quickly release the sensitive area once complete.

It is highly recommended, as we observed, that you have the wand connected to a smart TV, as it plays sound and video that will let you know if the wand movements have been done correctly. We learned that each spell requires a unique gesture, which can be found on a detailed page on the Magic Caster Wand app.

Every wand comes with an interactive wand box that plays part of “Hedwig’s Theme” and has multi-color illumination when opened. This box charges the battery, which has an eight-hour life.

Once you memorize a number of spells – or all of them, as Goslin has – you can perform them without the help of the tutorials. Just be sure to stay on the spell book homepage of the app so the wand notes it is in spell mode and will perform the desired effects of the spell cast.

There is also a dueling option in the app, which users can use to battle fellow wizards and witches when another wand is connected to its own smart device and app.

We were told more wand models are planned to be released and more spells will be added to the app in the future.
