“Sex-Ed at Hogwarts” lecture held at Boston University

The Harry Potter series often focuses on the many struggles that come with adolescence, including relationships. Now, two Boston University interns are expanding the discussion to sexual health.

As Bustle reports, the event, called “Sex-Ed at Hogwarts,” was held yesterday as part of Boston University’s “Frisky February,” described as,

[…] a month[-]long series of programs geared at raising awareness about safe, consensual sex.

According to the Boston Globe, Michelle Goode and Jamie Klufts, the graduate interns behind the event, came up with the concept upon realizing that author J.K. Rowling had not addressed the topic of sex in the Harry Potter books.

Explaining their approach, Klufts said,

A lot of students entering college don’t actually get a foundation in sexual health, so we are going back to the basics and finding ways to loop in references and scenarios from Harry Potter.

The Boston Globe also wrote,

The hour-and-a-half[-]long [workshop] will use topics, situations, and even vernacular from the books as examples to discuss topics, including responsible drinking, contraception, and sexually transmitted diseases.

Goode and Klufts expressed that they hoped to use the Harry Potter references “as an avenue to get the conversations [about sexual health] started.”
