Eddie Redmayne Among 2016 Oscar Nominees

by Sophie Reid · January 15, 2016

The Oscar nominations yesterday were rather overshadowed by the sad news that actor Alan Rickman had passed away. Nonetheless, despite the sad day, we were glad to see that there were some familiar names among the nominations. The nominations were announced on Thursday morning in LA.

The Revenant, featuring Domhnall Gleeson (Bill Weasley), leads the nominations with a total of 12. The nominations include Best Actor (Leonardo DiCaprio), Best Picture, Supporting Actor (Tom Hardy), Cinematography, Costume Design (Jacqueline West), Director (Alejandro G. Iñárritu), Film Editing, Make Up and Hair, Production Design, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, and Visual Effects.

Another Domhnall Gleeeson film, Ex Machina, has also been nominated for two awards: Visual Effects and Original Screenplay (Alex Garland).

Star Wars: The Force Awakens, also featuring Domhnall Gleeson, is nominated for five awards, including Music – Original Score for John Williams, who is responsible for some of the best-loved Harry Potter score. Williams’s has been nominated for an Oscar 50 times and has won on five of those occasions. Other nominations include Visual Effects, Film Editing, Sound Editing, and Sound Mixing.

The fourth and final film featuring Domhnall Gleeson, as well as Julie Walters (Molly Weasley) and Jim Broadbent (Professor Slughorn), Brooklyn, is nominated for three awards: Best Picture, Leading Actress (Saoirse Ronan), and Adapted Screenplay (Nick Hornby).

Fantastic Beasts star Eddie Redmayne (Newt Scamander) is once again nominated for Leading Actor for his role in The Danish Girl. He won this award last year for his role as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything – will it be two years in a row?

The film is also nominated for Costume Design (Paco Delgado), Production Design, and Supporting Actress (Alicia Vikander).

Steve Jobs, which features Fantastic Beasts actress Katherine Waterston is nominated for Leading Actor (Michael Fassbender) and Supporting Actress (Kate Winslet).

Cinderella, directed by Sir Kenneth Branagh (Gilderoy Lockhart) and starring Helena Bonham Carter (Bellatrix Lestrange), is nominated for Costume Design (Sandy Powell).

Finally, the theme song for James Bond film Spectre, featuring Ralph Fiennes (Lord Voldemort), “Writing’s on the Wall” by Sam Smith, is nominated for Original Song.

You can read the full list of nominations here.

The awards ceremony will take place on February 28.

Whom do you hope will pick up the awards this year? Was there anyone you think missed out on being nominated? Let us know in the comments!
