“Cursed Child” Has Found Its New Home on Broadway!

Amid the celebrating of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child‘s record-breaking win at last night’s Olivier Awards came news that American fans have been dying to hear.

Director John Tiffany spoke to WhatsOnStage after his win for Best Director and confirmed that the play had indeed found its next home in America and when the play would open for American audiences.

It’s all sorted. We’ve got the Lyric Theatre, and I think we’re almost there with the actors. We open next year, spring.

In addition to Tiffany’s exciting news, Best Actress in a Supporting Role winner Noma Dumezweni also revealed to What’sOnStage that she would “love” to reprise her role as Hermione Granger on the American stage.

Best New Play winner writer Jack Thorne also spoke to the press about attracting new fans to the theater.

John [Tiffany] said the phrase he hates most is someone saying ‘I should go to the theatre more’. We are in a battle with PlayStations, if we’re going to win the we’ve got to find that audience and bring them in. I hope we’re like a gateway drug that will get people involved in theatre.

Cursed Child costume designer and new Olivier Award winner Katrina Lindsay also talked about the audiences coming to see the play.

It’s always really lovely when you feel like theatre is reaching out to the next generation and it is great that there have been so many non-theatre people coming in to see the show and loving it.

Anthony Boyle, who took home the Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role, revealed how much the play and the award meant to him.

 

 

There were cheers all around yesterday, from fans as well as cast members, after Cursed Child took home nine of the 11 Olivier Awards it was nominated for.
