“Strike” Set to Return in 2018

by Sophie Reid · September 17, 2017

Good news, Strike fans! Following the airing of the second and final part of The Silkworm tonight, Sunday, September 17, BBC has announced that Strike will be returning in 2018. As readers will know, there is another book yet to be adapted, Career of Evil, with the promise from Rowling for many more books (and the fourth one due in 2018). Strike: Career of Evil will air on BBC in 2018 and will feature two 60-minute episodes. Strike: The Cuckoo’s Calling and Strike: The Silkworm have been a huge success for BBC and looks set to continue in 2018.

The first episode of Strike[: T]he Cuckoo’s Calling had a consolidated audience of 7.8m on BBC One with a consolidated series average of 7.4m viewers across all three episodes.

Both Tom Burke and Holliday Grainger will reprise their roles.

Burke will return as Strike in Strike[:] Career of Evil as the war veteran turned private detective operating out of a tiny office in London’s Denmark Street.  Though he’s wounded both physically and psychologically, Strike’s unique insight and his background as an SIB investigator prove crucial in unravelling complex cases.
Grainger will also return to play Robin, Strike’s assistant. Though she begins as a temporary secretary, managing Strike’s chaotic life, she soon becomes involved with his caseload and begins to see her true potential.

And good news, US and Canadian viewers! Cinemax has acquired the rights to the show, and hopefully, this means it will begin airing soon.

You can learn more in the press release below.

Are you looking forward to seeing more Strike on our screens next year?

Press Release
TOM BURKE AND HOLLIDAY GRAINGER TO RETURN IN STRIKE - CAREER OF EVIL IN 2018

Show based on J.K. Rowling’s crime novels written under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith to air on BBC One in 2018

Sunday 17 September 2017 - LONDON. British actors Tom Burke as ‘Cormoran Strike’ and Holliday Grainger as ‘Robin Ellacott’ are set to return for Strike - Career of Evil, the third story from the major new TV series for BBC One, The Strike Series, based on J.K. Rowling’s best-selling crime novels written under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith.

Strike - The Cuckoo’s Calling (3 x 60 minutes) and Strike - The Silkworm (2 x 60 minutes) aired from 26 August and received wide-spread critical praise from both the press and audiences. Strike - Career of Evil (2 x 60 minutes) is the third instalment to the series and will air later in 2018.

The first episode of Strike - the Cuckoo's Calling had a consolidated audience of 7.8m on BBC One with a consolidated series average of 7.4m viewers across all three episodes.

Burke and Grainger led a cast of acclaimed British actors including Tara Fitzgerald (Death in Paradise, In The Club), Martin Shaw (Inspector George Gently), Amber Anderson (The Riot Club, Black Mirror), and Sian Phillips (Midsomer Murders, Under Milk Wood) for Strike - The Cuckoo’s Calling and Monica Dolan (The Witness for the Prosecution), Tim McInnerny (National Treasure, Sherlock) and Lia Williams (The Crown, The Missing) for Strike - The Silkworm.

Burke will return as Strike in Strike - Career of Evil as the war veteran turned private detective operating out of a tiny office in London’s Denmark Street. Though he’s wounded both physically and psychologically, Strike’s unique insight and his background as an SIB investigator prove crucial in unravelling complex cases.

Grainger will also return to play Robin, Strike's assistant. Though she begins as a temporary secretary, managing Strike’s chaotic life, she soon becomes involved with his caseload and begins to see her true potential.

When a dismembered leg is sent to Strike’s office, it sends both Cormoran's and Robin’s lives into disarray, forcing them to confront ghosts from their pasts. Their partnership reaches breaking point as Robin’s wedding approaches and they disagree about how to ensnare a man who abuses children.

J.K. Rowling (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, The Casual Vacancy), Neil Blair (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, The Casual Vacancy), Ruth Kenley-Letts (The Casual Vacancy, The Hour) and Elizabeth Kilgarriff (for the BBC) executive produce based on a script by Tom Edge (The Last Dragon Slayer, Lovesick), who has also written The Silkworm and is also an executive producer. Charles Sturridge (Da Vinci's Demons, Shackleton) will direct and Jackie Larkin (Stella Days, Kings) will produce.

Cinemax has acquired U.S. and Canadian rights to the show.

This marks a continuation of the BBC’s relationship with Brontë Film and TV and J.K. Rowling. Brontë Film & TV produced J.K. Rowling’s The Casual Vacancy, a three-part serial, which aired on BBC One in 2015.

The Cuckoo’s Calling was published to critical acclaim in 2013 and went on to be a global bestseller, followed in 2014 by The Silkworm and Career of Evil in 2015. All three books were number one Sunday Times bestsellers in both hardback and paperback and Little, Brown has sold in total over four million copies worldwide across all editions.

Cormoran Strike is one of the most memorable and distinctive detectives in crime fiction today and Robert Galbraith is among the genre’s most celebrated writers, shortlisted for the prestigious CWA Gold Dagger in 2015 and the Theakston Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year in 2016.
