Helena Bonham Carter Dons Cat Ears for Save the Children’s Fundraising Gala

by Gayane Kaligian · November 20, 2017

Bellatrix Lestrange and Narcissa Malfoy have never been known for their acts of charity, but Helena Bonham Carter and Helen McCrory, the actresses who played them, have proven themselves to be the exact opposite. The two brandished wands together at the Save the Children charity Gala on November 17.

The event was Harry Potter themed in honor of the 20th anniversary of the publication of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, but that wasn’t its true focus. Save the Children proudly reports that the event raised over £950,000 ($1,258,085) through ticket sales, auction items, and donations!

Save the Children provides schooling and resources to children all over the world. For Harry Potter, an organization that would help him get away from the Dursleys and into Hogwarts would certainly have been helpful, so it’s no wonder J.K. Rowling supports this particular cause. It also provides disaster relief, health care, and food for starving families. A few shocking facts cited by the foundation prove that children worldwide need its help:

It is estimated that, worldwide, up to 1.5 billion children experience violence each year, 150 million children are engaged in child labor, 1 in 4 women aged between 20 and 24 were child brides, there are 250,000 child soldiers, [and] 13 million children are orphans, having lost both parents.

We’re sure the hefty sum raised will help Save the Children provide aid to thousands of children! You can learn more and donate to Save the Children at its website.

About Save the Children:

We do whatever it takes to save children. From their first moments of life, we work to get children the healthcare, food and water, safety and education they need to survive and thrive.  We're on the ground in 120 countries and we’re there for children in their toughest moments, in the toughest places. Our pioneering work helps give children, no matter where they’re born, the chance to fulfil their potential. For more information visit www.savethechildren.org.uk

Education: of the 2.6 billion children in the world, 59 million children are not in school. Of children in school, 250 million are not learning the basics in reading and mathematics

Save the Children believes that all children should have the chance to learn, and have access to a basic, quality education

  • We want to expand the opportunities to deliver early learning – the biggest opportunity for children
  • We work across 120 countries including here in the UK, where children from poor backgrounds are twice as likely not to be ready to learn when they start school. We are investing in the home learning environment, quality early years services, and community-level local systems change

Protection: we want to protect children from harm, whether children are separated from their family, on the move and homeless, affected by an emergency, or living in a conflict zone. Every child should grow up in a safe, supportive family environment, yet right now millions are not so lucky.

  • It is estimated that worldwide:

o   Up to 1.5 billion children experience violence each year

o   150 million children are engaged in child labour

o   1 in 4 women aged between 20 and 24 were child brides

o   there are 250,000 child soldiers

o   13 million children are orphans, having lost both parents.

Children’s futures: our mission is to build a better future for and with children. We want to change the world for children, and transform the future we share.

There is something magical about being a child, and every child has the right to enjoy a childhood where they are safe from harm, able to learn, and fulfil their potential. Your donation at The Winter Gala will help us bring magic to children’s futures around the world.
