“Cursed Child” Legal Issues Resolved; the Show Will Go On in San Francisco

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child has been set to begin performances at San Francisco’s Curran Theater in fall 2019, but until recently, fans worried that a claim by Nederlander of San Francisco Associates (also known as SHN) against the owner of the theater might prevent the show’s opening. A judge has recently ruled in favor of Carol Shorenstein Hays, the owner of the Curran Theater, which means that the show will go on in San Francisco.

In its claim, filed back in September, SHN cited the noncompete clause that exists between the two companies and said the staging of Cursed Child, as well as hit musical Dear Evan Hansen, would result in “irreparable harm.” 

However, the judge said that since the noncompete clause only applies to properties either part controls, SHN could not prevent the staging of the two shows since they are not currently controlled by either group. This means that Cursed Child will premiere at the Curran Theater as planned next fall.

“They took a shot,” said Shorenstein Hays’ attorney. “They wanted to shut it down, and their request was emphatically denied.”
