Why I’m Kind of in Love with Viktor Krum

by McKay S. · June 10, 2019

I hate to admit it, but part of me always wanted Hermione to actually end up with Viktor Krum, not Ron. Viktor will always be one of those characters that I wish we had got to know better, and I’ll forever be clinging on to what we do get of him in the books and movies.

He liked Hermione as she was.

Maybe it’s the former ugly duckling in me, but I fell a little bit in love with him because he saw – and liked – Hermione as she was. Bushy hair, big teeth (during part of the year, at least), and all. Because despite his popularity and his ability to surround himself with anyone he desired, he chose Hermione. Hermione even told us that“he did say he’d never felt the same way about anyone else” (GoF, ch. 24). I can just picture elementary school me swooning at those few words of his, and I’m definitely swooning rereading it now.

I think Viktor is honestly as close to genuine romance that we get in the series since most of the couples had been friends for many years before falling in love. When Viktor saw Hermione again at Bill and Fleur’s wedding in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, without a second thought, he told her, “You look vunderful” (DH, ch. 8). My heart can’t take how easily and genuinely he compliments her. Viktor actively sought her out. He took interest in the things that she was interested in. And he made Hermione feel special – which is something we all deserve to feel.

He had humility.

Harry had never seen anyone fly like that; Krum hardly looked as though he was using a broomstick at all; he moved so easily through the air that he looked unsupported and weightless.” (GoF, ch. 7)

Don’t ask me how someone can be both shy and confident. And don’t ask me why I love it so much. But in Deathly Hallows, Krum says, “Vot is the point of being an international Quidditch player if all the good-looking girls are taken?” (DH, ch. 8). Aside from this instance, unlike many celebrities – both in the wizarding world and in ours – Viktor showed humility. He was obviously great at Quidditch, and we know he must’ve been talented at magic in general because the Goblet of Fire chose him as the Durmstrang champion. It’s pointed out to us again and again that the other students were all swooning over him. Yet he was gentle, and to Hermione, “he said he’d been coming up to the library every day to try and talk to [her], but he hadn’t been able to pluck up the courage” (GoF, ch. 23). I have a soft spot for shy guys, and between Neville and Viktor, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire left me feeling giddy.

He was unbelievably talented.

Who cares what he looks like? He’s unbelievable. He’s really young too. Only just eighteen or something. He’s a genius, you wait until tonight, you’ll see.” (GoF, ch.7)

Can you imagine having the talent that Krum had at his age? I don’t even have that kind of talent now! Before Ron decided that Krum was his mortal enemy, we get the real truth – Krum is an unbelievable genius.

He was good.

We also know that Krum doesn’t like Dark Magic; when he sees Xenophilius wearing what he believes to be Grindelwald’s mark, he threatens to duel him. Krum also mentions that his grandfather was killed by Grindelwald, so we know that he has strong familial loyalty. Hating evil and having love for your family are both great characteristics in my book.

Honestly, Viktor Krum is the kind of guy you want on your team: strong, powerful, influential, and just genuinely good. How can you not love him?
