Ready for Rio? Preproduction Has Begun on Third “Fantastic Beasts” Film

by Brienne Green · November 4, 2019

Things are finally moving forward with the third installment of the Fantastic Beasts franchise! Today, Wizarding World Digital released a few new details about the cast, crew, and location.

✨ Fantastic Beasts news alert! ✨ It’s our pleasure to announce that pre-production on the third film is officially underway. Here are some new details, including the cast, the production team, and a rather special new location: https://t.co/VWKb5Nrzrx pic.twitter.com/TGvgnL1Y5y

The site says the third movie has been greenlit, with full production slated to begin in spring 2020. MuggleNet also has it from an official source that some aspects of production will commence as soon as this week.

Returning to the roles we’ve come to know and love will be Eddie Redmayne (Newt Scamander), Katherine Waterston (Tina Goldstein), Dan Fogler (Jacob Kowalski), Alison Sudol (Queenie Goldstein), Ezra Miller (Credence Barebone), Jude Law (Albus Dumbledore), and Johnny Depp (Gellert Grindelwald), while Wizarding World Digital says we’ll be seeing more this time around from Jessica Williams‘ briefly glimpsed character in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.

Stay tuned to learn more about her character, Professor Eulalie ‘Lally’ Hicks, a teacher at Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizadry, the American equivalent of Hogwarts.

Does this mean we’ll finally get a glimpse of Ilvermorny? We certainly hope that’s the case, but we do know one locale we’ll be visiting in the third film: Rio!

As with the first two films, the third will take us to new continents, exploring wizarding cultures across the globe. The first ‘Fantastic Beasts’ film introduced us to American wizarding life in 1927 New York, the second took us to Paris, and we can now reveal that the third film will officially be visiting… Rio de Janeiro, Brazil!

Of course, most fans had already guessed that based on J.K. Rowling’s Twitter hints in December 2018, but it’s nice to have it confirmed.

Wizarding World Digital also posted details on the movie’s crew. The third Fantastic Beasts film will once again be directed by David Yates, with the screenplay penned by Rowling and Steve Kloves. Coming together again as producers will be Rowling, Kloves, David Heyman, Lionel Wigram, and Tim Lewis, and the picture will be executive produced by Neil Blair, Danny Cohen, Josh Berger, and Courtenay Valenti.

The third installment is as yet unnamed, but we’ll keep you posted on that, and its November 12, 2021, release date remains the same.

How excited are you about visiting the wizarding world of Brazil? Do you think we’ll be making a stop at Ilvermorny as well? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
