Robert Pattinson Talks “The Lighthouse,” “Batman”, and “Harry Potter” in HFPA Interview

by Aly Kirk · November 25, 2019

Having moved on from roles in the mainstream media, Robert Pattinson seems like he is thriving in the indie culture scene.

Among some of Pattinson’s most recent work is the soon-to-be-released movie The Lighthouse. Playing one of the two lighthouse keepers on an island, Pattinson seems to work effortlessly in combination with the shady black-and-white cinematography. In an interview with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), Pattinson spoke about when he found out that Willem Dafoe would be his costar for the 1890s period piece. As Pattinson described in the interview, based on the character in the script, he “assumed” the actor would be “enormous and evil.”

Then when Robert Eggers sent me a picture of Willem, suddenly, I was like, ‘[W]ow.’ Because there is something very frightening about him. He seems dangerous, but also, there is mischievousness, and there is just something naughty about his face and his voice.

In The King, which is now available for streaming on Netflix, Pattinson plays a suave-looking Frenchman in medieval England when a new king reluctantly takes the throne. The show is based on several of William Shakespeare’s plays and stars Timotheé Chalamet as the young king who is reluctant to accept the burden of the crown.

Pattinson’s most recent move may pull him back into mainstream theaters. Since the release of the news that Pattinson will be the next DC antihero, fans everywhere are split between the idea that he could either fill the cape (so to speak) successfully or fall flat. Either way, we are looking forward to seeing Pattinson back on the big screen.

In the interview with the HFPA, Pattinson comes at each of his new roles with new knowledge and experience from previous projects.

I feel like it is stuff you try and figure out in one movie [and] you do bring it to the next one a lot of the time. Especially things about an understanding of the camera. No one really wants to admit it that much, but knowing your face is so important in film acting.

For the rest of the interview, Pattinson reminisces about past parts that “have a special place in [his] heart.” His participation in Harry Potter is described as a “friendly environment,” especially for the younger kids who had full hours of school while also shooting the films.

It was amazing. It was very special, and I really like that movie as well. I wouldn’t be acting professionally if it wasn’t for that.

When asked if he was still in touch with any of the actors from the Harry Potter movies, Pattinson says he’s only been in touch with Emma Watson a few times in the years since the release of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Would a cast reunion of Goblet of Fire be too much to ask?!

Which one of Robert Pattinson’s latest projects are you most excited to see?
